Top 20 Video Games Where You Play as a Knight

1-21

About this gallery:

For this list, we focused on video games where you play as a knight, or where the profession is so integral to the plot that you just can’t escape it. While we got a little creative with a few titles, we made a firm decision: no RPGs that let you be a wizard, thief, barbarian, or any of those other (admittedly cool) archetypes. Only knights allowed! So, no Baldur's Gate 3, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Skyrim, or the like – this is a strictly sword-and-armor affair.

Think we missed an essential knightly game? Well, don’t keep it to yourself – shout it out in the comments! Who knows, maybe we’ll see it in a future list. 🛡️⚔️

1428 Shadows over Silesia

20. 1428: Shadows over Silesia (2022)

History buffs and medieval enthusiasts, rejoice! 1428: Shadows over Silesia drops you into the gritty chaos of a real historical setting – think plague, heretics, and more swords than a Renaissance Faire. This game isn't just about hacking your way through enemies (though there’s plenty of that); it’s also a brain teaser with puzzles and stealth mechanics thrown in. You’ll feel the weight of your armor and the pressure of staying alive in a world that’s as ruthless as it is fascinating. Who knew history class could be this much fun? | © KUBI Games

Knightin

19. Knightin'+ (2019)

If a classic dungeon crawler and a Saturday morning cartoon had a baby, it’d be Knightin'+. This charming little indie gem doesn’t take itself too seriously, and that’s part of its magic. You’ll find yourself swinging your sword at baddies, solving puzzles, and collecting loot like a knight with an insatiable treasure addiction. The pixel art is adorable, the humor is cheeky, and the gameplay scratches that nostalgic itch for old-school adventurers. You’re here to save the day – well, eventually, once you’re done smashing pots for rupees. | © Muzt Die Studios

FOR HONOR

18. For Honor (2017)

If For Honor were a high school sports drama, it’d be the jock that’s a bit too serious but undeniably talented. This medieval combat game throws knights, samurai, and Vikings into an epic battle royale, because why not? The multiplayer duels are a sweaty-palmed adrenaline rush, and mastering each class’s unique fighting style feels like earning a black belt in digital swordsmanship. Sure, it can get intense (and sometimes frustrating), but when you land that perfect parry, you’ll feel like the medieval GOAT. | © Ubisoft

King Arthur Knights Tale

17. King Arthur: Knight's Tale (2022)

What happens when you mix Arthurian legend, tactical gameplay, and a healthy dose of dark fantasy? You get King Arthur: Knight's Tale, where "chivalry" is a lot more complicated than you'd think. This game flips the round table on its head, throwing moral dilemmas and turn-based combat into the mix. Do you stick to the knightly code or embrace your darker side? Either way, it’s a richly atmospheric ride through one of the most iconic mythologies ever. Just don’t expect everything to be shiny armor and happy endings. | © NeocoreGames

MORDHAU

16. MORDHAU (2019)

Think of MORDHAU as a medieval version of Battlefield – but with more dismemberment and fewer helicopters. This multiplayer brawler lets you customize your knight and then throw yourself into chaotic battles where skill actually matters. Want to fight with honor? Go ahead, but don’t be surprised when someone lobs your head off with a halberd. From siege weapons to slapstick moments (like accidentally bopping a teammate), this game strikes a perfect balance between epic and hilarious. Just watch your back – there’s no respawning in real life! | © Triternion

Chivalry 2 msn

15. Chivalry II (2021)

Prepare yourself for a symphony of chaos and clanging swords in Chivalry II. This multiplayer melee combat game is like stepping into the ultimate medieval action movie, complete with over-the-top battles, flaming arrows, and the occasional cow carcass being launched from a trebuchet (yes, really). The combat is visceral, the environments are stunning, and the voice lines range from heroic to downright hilarious. Whether you’re storming castles or screaming like a maniac while charging into battle, this game is medieval mayhem at its finest. | © Torn Banner Studios

Cropped Knights Path The Tournament

14. Knight's Path: The Tournament (2023)

Ever fancied yourself as the underdog in a medieval tournament, starting with zilch and clawing your way to the top? Knight's Path: The Tournament lets you do just that. This short yet immersive RPG challenges you to acquire weapons, master combat, and face off against eleven unique opponents, each with their own fighting style. The progression system is as rewarding as finding a hidden cache of gold in a dragon’s lair. Plus, there’s a local cat you can befriend – because every knight needs a feline squire, right? | © Jan Tichota, Aamn Chahrour

Knightfall A Daring Journey

13. Knightfall: A Daring Journey (2022)

Knightfall: A Daring Journey is a knight game with a twist – it’s also a battle royale! You and a trusty co-op partner embark on a perilous journey to deliver a rose, facing off against other knightly duos along the way. It’s a wild mix of high-stakes strategy, comedic horse-riding physics, and frantic crossbow battles. The game isn’t afraid to laugh at itself, and you’ll probably laugh, too, as your horse awkwardly flips over a hedge while you’re being chased. It’s daring, it’s ridiculous, and it’s pure fun. | © Landfall

KILL KNIGHT

12. KILL KNIGHT (2023)

Ever wondered what would happen if you tossed a knight into an eldritch blender set to "arcade chaos"? Enter KILL KNIGHT, where you, a condemned knight, are thrust into a void teeming with otherworldly horrors. Armed with an arsenal that would make any medieval warrior jealous, you’ll obliterate swarms of enemies in ultra-responsive, isometric action. It’s like someone gave a knight a machine gun and said, "Have at it!" Fast-paced, brutally challenging, and endlessly replayable, this game is a love letter to arcade shooters – with a chivalrous twist. | © PlaySide

Castle Crashers

11. Castle Crashers (2008)

Ah, Castle Crashers, the game that introduced a generation of gamers to the joy of knightly absurdity. This side-scrolling beat-’em-up has it all: quirky humor, ridiculously cute art, and an endless supply of knights fighting over who gets the princess. With up to four-player co-op, it’s as much about teamwork as it is about friendly fire (and trust us, there will be plenty of that). Whether you’re battling giant cats or riding deer that poop rainbows, Castle Crashers is an unforgettable adventure. | © The Behemoth

Wartales

10. Wartales (2023)

Ever wondered what it’s like to be a knight in a band of mercenaries, wandering through a harsh medieval world? Wartales lets you live that life, complete with managing your party, hunting for food, and – let’s face it – probably making some morally questionable decisions. This gritty, open-world RPG blends tactical combat with survival elements, so you’re just as likely to die from starvation as you are from a sword to the face. It’s like Game of Thrones meets spreadsheets, but in the most addictive way possible. | © Shiro Games

Blasphemous

9. Blasphemous (2019)

Take the religious imagery of the Middle Ages, add a dash of nightmares, and crank up the gothic vibes to 11 – that’s Blasphemous in a nutshell. This 2D action-platformer isn’t just a game; it’s a stunningly grotesque work of art. You play as The Penitent One, a silent knight wielding a spiky sword and enough guilt to fuel an entire confession booth. The combat is brutal, the bosses are insane, and the lore is wonderfully weird. If medieval horror is your jam, this is your holy grail. | © The Game Kitchen

Kingdom come

8. Kingdom Come: Deliverance (2018)

Who needs dragons and magic when you’ve got historically accurate medieval mayhem? Kingdom Come: Deliverance drops you into 15th-century Bohemia as Henry, a blacksmith’s son turned reluctant hero. The game is as much about surviving in a brutal world as it is about becoming a knight. You’ll learn how to swing a sword (and probably miss), navigate intricate politics, and even struggle with mundane tasks like reading. It’s immersive, it’s challenging, and it’s as close to real knight life as you’ll ever get without a time machine. | © Warhorse Studios

Cropped unicorn overlord

7. Unicorn Overlord (2024)

Don’t let the whimsical name fool you – Unicorn Overlord is a tactical RPG brimming with depth and charm. This game is all about leading your band of knights (and yes, there are unicorns involved) in epic battles across a vibrant fantasy world. It’s a delightful blend of strategy, adventure, and pure imagination, with a story that keeps you hooked from start to finish. If you’ve ever wanted to command a knightly army and ride a unicorn into battle, well, this is your chance. | © Atlus

DARK SOULS 2

6. Dark Souls 2 (2014)

While the Dark Souls series is packed with unforgettable challenges, we chose Dark Souls 2 for its undeniable commitment to the knightly aesthetic. This game immerses you in a medieval world teeming with chivalric undertones, from the towering knight bosses to the countless enemy knights you’ll clash with in your journey. Each encounter feels like a duel straight out of Arthurian legends – if Arthurian legends had poison swamps and cursed swords. Unlike Elden Ring or other Dark Souls titles, this one leans heavily into the knightly vibe, making it perfect for anyone who dreams of clashing swords in gothic cathedrals. Sure, it’s hard as nails, but victory feels even sweeter when you’re decked out in full plate armor. | © FromSoftware

Shovel Knight

5. Shovel Knight (2014)

Who needs a sword when you’ve got a trusty shovel? Shovel Knight is a love letter to retro platformers, but with enough modern polish to make it shine like a freshly dug treasure chest. You’ll battle quirky knights with pun-tastic names like King Knight and Propeller Knight, all while bouncing around like an athletic pogo stick. The game’s charm lies in its humor, tight controls, and gorgeous pixel art that’s as timeless as the knightly code itself. Whether you’re digging for treasure or digging yourself out of trouble, this one’s a certified classic. | © Yacht Club Games

Cropped Fire Emblem

4. Fire Emblem: Awakening (2012)

If strategy games had a prom king, Fire Emblem: Awakening would win by a landslide. This tactical RPG lets you command an army of knights, mages, and other medieval misfits as you navigate a heartfelt story full of twists and turns. The game’s relationship system adds a layer of depth, letting you pair up characters to unleash devastating combos – and maybe even fall in love. Who knew being a tactician could be so romantic? With its memorable cast and addictive gameplay, it’s a game worthy of any knight’s attention. | © Nintendo / Intelligent Systems

Cropped Mount Blade II Bannerlord

3. Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord (2020)

Ever wanted to lead your own army of knights, siege castles, and become the lord of all you survey? Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord makes those medieval dreams come true. This sandbox RPG combines large-scale battles, political intrigue, and kingdom management into one epic package. You can recruit peasants, train them into fearsome warriors, and then ride into battle with your own custom army. It’s gritty, it’s grand, and it’s the closest you’ll get to living out your knightly fantasies without accidentally starting a LARP group. | © TaleWorlds Entertainment

Cropped Felvidek

2. Felvidek (2023)

Step into the boots of Pavol, an alcoholic knight in 15th-century Slovakia, as you navigate a land plagued by Hussites and Ottomans in Felvidek. This JRPG combines historical settings with a protagonist who’s as flawed as he is endearing. Meet a cast of diverse characters, engage in strategic battles, and maybe lay off the mead long enough to save the day. It’s a tale of redemption, bravery, and the occasional hangover – because even knights have their vices. | © Jozef Pavelka, Vlado Ganaj

Hollow Knight

1. Hollow Knight (2017)

Okay, so you’re technically a bug knight in Hollow Knight, but don’t let that stop you from donning your metaphorical armor and diving into this masterpiece. This indie darling delivers a sprawling underground world packed with secrets, gorgeous art, and nail-biting combat. You’ll face off against bug bosses that feel as challenging as any dragon or warlord, all while piecing together a beautifully melancholic story. It’s atmospheric, emotional, and proof that knighthood transcends species. Hollow Knight is more than a game – it’s a journey that stays with you long after the credits roll. | © Team Cherry
