Dormin possesses Wander, Lord Emon seals the entity away, and Mono awakens only to discover that her rescuer has become a horned infant. The Suicide Mission is less a final level than a three-hour audit of every decision Shepard made beforehand. Ship upgrades matter. Loyalty matters. Sending the wrong specialist through a vent can suddenly matter quite a lot. Squad members can survive, die individually, or be wiped out in horrifying numbers depending on the player’s preparation and assignments. After three games of monsters, chainsaw bayonets and men built like refrigerators, Gears of War 3 ends on something surprisingly close to exhaustion. Adam Fenix activates his weapon, the Lambent are destroyed, and Marcus finally kills Queen Myrrah using Dom’s knife. Humanity survives, but victory arrives after Marcus has lost nearly everyone who mattered to him. Batman spends most of Arkham City trying to stop Joker from dying, which makes Joker’s final mistake especially cruel. He attacks Batman, the cure vial shatters, and the Clown Prince of Crime dies laughing after learning that Batman still would have saved him. Then comes the image that sells the entire finale: Batman carrying Joker’s body out of Arkham City without saying a word. A True Pacifist ending should probably feel unbearably sentimental. Somehow, Undertale earns every second of it. Flowey becomes Asriel, the monsters finally have a path to the surface, and Frisk can leave the Underground without turning mercy into just another naïve RPG choice. The clever part comes afterward: the game remembers. Geralt can kill monsters all day; knowing when to stop protecting Ciri is considerably harder. Her fate is quietly shaped through earlier moments in which Geralt can trust her judgment, encourage her independence or smother her with good intentions. That can lead Ciri toward becoming a witcher, becoming empress, or apparently never returning at all. James spends most of Silent Hill 2 believing he came to town because of a letter from his dead wife, only for the truth to become far uglier. He killed Mary himself, smothering her after years of illness and resentment, and Silent Hill has been forcing him to confront what he buried. BioShock Infinite spends its final minutes turning Booker DeWitt’s entire identity inside out, revealing that Zachary Comstock is another version of Booker created by a different outcome at his baptism. Elizabeth’s solution is brutal: prevent that branching point altogether. Multiple Elizabeths drown Booker before the choice can be made, cutting Comstock off at the source. No giant twist is waiting inside Hyrule Castle, and Breath of the Wild does not really need one. Link finally reaches Calamity Ganon, Zelda is freed after holding him back for a century, and the kingdom gets something it has barely seen throughout the adventure: a future. Completing the memories adds a quieter coda in which Link and Zelda set out to restore Hyrule. A game built around saying “sure, try it” to terrible ideas was never going to settle for one tidy ending. The Netherbrain can be destroyed or controlled, companions can reach radically different fates, and becoming a mind flayer may be sacrifice, transformation or the beginning of another problem entirely. The expanded epilogue makes those consequences even richer, reuniting surviving allies months later. Killing The Boss hurts before Snake even understands why. Learning the truth afterward makes it vicious. She was never the traitor history would remember; her final mission required accepting disgrace, defecting publicly and ultimately dying at Snake’s hands to preserve America’s interests. He receives medals while she receives blame, then visits her grave and gives the salute she actually deserved. That final tear is where the heroic Naked Snake begins disappearing and the future Big Boss starts taking his place. | © Konami
Joel does save Ellie. That is precisely the problem. After discovering the Fireflies intend to operate on her in pursuit of a possible cure, he kills his way through the hospital, takes an unconscious Ellie and later lies about what happened. She asks him directly whether his story is true; Joel swears it is.
