15 Video Games That Became Famous Overnight

1-15

Instant phenomenon.

Duck Duck Goose

15. Goose Goose Duck (2021)

Gaggle Studios launched Goose Goose Duck in 2021, riding the exact wave Among Us had already carved out. The setup swaps spaceship sabotage for a farmyard full of geese and hidden ducks. It picked up over 100,000 concurrent players on Steam within its first year, mostly through Discord servers and Twitch raids. Content Warning

14. Content Warning (2024)

Four Danish developers built Content Warning in about three weeks, a fact they've mentioned in multiple interviews after launch. The game hands players a camcorder and drops them into a monster-filled dimension called the Old World. It sold over 3 million copies within days of its April 2024 release on Steam. Nobody involved expected a joke about viral videos to actually go viral. | © Landfall Publishing
Buckshot Roulette

13. Buckshot Roulette (2024)

A revolver, one bullet, two players, and Mikael Haveri's name attached as the sole developer. That's Buckshot Roulette in its entirety, released in 2024 for a few dollars on Steam. Streamers turned the game's shotgun standoff against a masked dealer into a horror-comedy staple almost immediately. It proves a game doesn't need more than a table and a gun to spread everywhere. | © Mike Klubnika
Phasmophobia

12. Phasmophobia (2020)

Kinetic Games was a four-person team when they put out Phasmophobia in September 2020. Players hunt ghosts using EMF readers and spirit boxes, working off real paranormal investigation terminology. The game hit over 100,000 concurrent Steam players within two months, largely through Twitch and YouTube ghost-hunting clips. A studio that small rarely ends up defining an entire genre. | © Kinetic Games
Vampire Survivors

11. Vampire Survivors (2022)

Luca Galante made Vampire Survivors mostly alone, and the game looked like a deliberate throwback to 1990s shareware. Its early access price sat at two dollars in 2022, which felt almost like a mistake given how much it delivered. Within months it had sold over a million copies and spawned dozens of imitators tagged "survivors-like." Poncle stayed a tiny team even after the money came in. | © Poncle
Lethal Company

10. Lethal Company (2023)

Zeekerss spent about three years building Lethal Company mostly alone before releasing it in October 2023. The game asks four players to scavenge abandoned moons while something in the dark tracks their movement. Clips of players screaming into proximity chat turned it into a Twitch staple within weeks. It crossed a million copies sold by December, without a marketing budget behind it.
Only Up

9. Only Up! (2023)

A single developer named uuulala built Only Up! around one mechanic: climb and never fall back down. There's no checkpoint system, so one slip can undo an hour of progress. Streamers turned that cruelty into content, watching grown adults lose their minds over a single misstep near the top. It topped Steam's charts within days of its March 2023 release before vanishing from sale over asset disputes.
Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy

8. Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy (2017)

Bennett Foddy narrates his own game, and part of what he says is that it was made "for a certain kind of person." Getting Over It puts a man in a cauldron with only a hammer to climb a mountain of junk, and falling can send him all the way back to the start. It came out in 2017, but its second wave hit in 2020 when streamers rediscovered it during lockdown. Foddy has said watching people rage was "the whole point."
Palworld

7. Palworld (2024)

Pocketpair released Palworld in January 2024 and hit 25 million players within a month. The pitch was simple and a little absurd: catch creatures that look suspiciously like Pokémon, then put them to work in factories. That contrast, cute monster design next to gun-toting survival mechanics, is what made clips spread so fast. Nintendo hadn't sued anyone yet, but the internet was already calling it "Pokémon with guns."
Flappy bird

6. Flappy Bird (2013)

Dong Nguyen built Flappy Bird in a few days and released it in 2013 without expecting much. By early 2014 it was pulling in a reported $50,000 a day from ads, and Nguyen pulled it from app stores himself. He told Forbes the game's success had "ruined his simple life." A game about tapping a screen to avoid pipes became, briefly, one of the most downloaded apps in the world.
Helldivers 2

5. Helldivers 2 (2024)

Sony expected modest numbers when Arrowhead released Helldivers 2 in February 2024. It crossed 12 million copies sold within four months, on a budget nowhere near Sony's usual blockbusters. Players kept it in Steam's top spot for weeks by fighting each other over which alien faction deserved more attention. A mandatory PSN login requirement briefly tanked its review score before Sony reversed course. | © Sony Interactive Entertainment
Pokémon GO

4. Pokémon GO (2016)

Niantic pulled location data from an earlier project, Ingress, to build the map underneath Pokémon GO. Within a week of its July 2016 launch it had more daily users than Twitter did at the time. People walked into traffic and one man in Wyoming reportedly found a body while looking for a Pokémon near a river. John Hanke, the CEO who ran Niantic, had spun the company out of Google two years earlier. | © Niantic
Fall Guys

3. Fall Guys (2020)

Ninety players jump, slip, and get knocked off a giant fan in Fall Guys, and somehow that was the whole pitch. Mediatonic's game launched in August 2020 and became the most downloaded PS Plus title ever within its first month. It beat Fortnite's Twitch viewership on release week, which nobody in the studio saw coming. Fortnite

2. Fortnite (2017)

Epic Games didn't design Fortnite's Battle Royale mode as the main game at all. It shipped in September 2017 as a bolted-on mode to a middling co-op shooter called Fortnite: Save the World. Within two weeks the free mode had ten million players, dwarfing the base game it came from. Drake played it live on Twitch with rapper Travis Scott that March, and the stream broke the platform's concurrent viewer record. | © Epic Games
Among Us

1. Among Us (2018)

Innersloth released Among Us in 2016 to almost nobody. Four years later, Twitch streamers in Brazil and South Korea picked it up during lockdown and it topped 400 million monthly players by November 2020. The three-person studio hadn't planned a sequel and instead kept patching the original game for years. A title that launched to fewer than a thousand concurrent players became one of the most watched games on the internet. | © Innersloth
