15 Best Series Based on Historical Scandals

1-15

Truth stranger than fiction.

TV Shows & Movies - September 4th 2026, 23:59 GMT+2
The Act

15. The Act (2019)

Gypsy Rose Blanchard spent years in a wheelchair her mother told doctors she needed, and The Act rebuilds that fraud room by room. Patricia Arquette shaved her hairline and gained weight to play Dee Dee Blanchard, a level of transformation that unsettled her own crew. The real Gypsy is currently on parole after serving eight years for second-degree murder. Hulu built the show around her voice, not the true crime headlines. | © Hulu

The Girl from Plainville

14. The Girl from Plainville (2022)

Michelle Carter was seventeen when prosecutors said her text messages pushed Conrad Roy III toward suicide in 2014. The Girl from Plainville resists turning that into a clean villain story, and Elle Fanning plays Carter with more confusion than menace. Massachusetts had no law against encouraging suicide by text, so prosecutors charged her with involuntary manslaughter instead. She served eleven months of a fifteen-month sentence. | © Hulu

The Loudest Voice

13. The Loudest Voice (2019)

Russell Crowe put on a fat suit and a prosthetic nose to become Roger Ailes, the Fox News chairman who built cable's most profitable machine. The Loudest Voice compresses two decades of Ailes running Fox News into seven episodes, ending with his 2016 ouster over sexual harassment claims. Gabriel Sherman wrote the book the series is based on after years reporting on Ailes for New York magazine. Ailes died just over a year after he was forced out. | © Showtime

Feu Capote vs The Swans

12. Feud: Capote vs. The Swans (2024)

Truman Capote spent his final years mocked by the same women whose secrets made him famous, and Feud: Capote vs. The Swans picks up right after that betrayal. His 1975 story "La Côte Basque 1965" exposed private affairs and cruelty among New York's wealthiest wives, using barely disguised versions of real names. Naomi Watts plays Babe Paley, the socialite whose friendship with Capote never recovered. He died in 1984 having never finished the novel he promised would follow. | © FX

Impeachment American Crime Story

11. Impeachment: American Crime Story (2021)

Monica Lewinsky worked as a paid producer on Impeachment: American Crime Story, insisting her twenty-two-year-old self be shown with some dignity. The series spends its first hours on Linda Tripp, played by Sarah Paulson, who secretly recorded her conversations with Lewinsky in 1997. Those tapes ended up handed to Kenneth Starr's investigators and triggered the impeachment case against Bill Clinton. Beanie Feldstein plays Lewinsky in a performance built from hours of direct conversation with her. | © FX

The People v O J Simpson American Crime Story

10. The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story (2016)

Sarah Paulson gained weight and wore a fat suit to play Marcia Clark, then apologized to Clark years later for how the show first treated her. The trial ran from January 1995 to October 1995, one of the longest in California history. FX built the season around Jeffrey Toobin's book "The Run of His Life." Clark has said she watched the verdict scene and finally understood how the public saw her back then. | © FX

The Staircase

9. The Staircase (2022)

Toni Collette and Colin Firth play Kathleen and Michael Peterson in a case that produced two different endings depending on who you ask. Michael was convicted of murdering Kathleen in 2003, then took an Alford plea in 2017 admitting no guilt while conceding a jury could convict him. The original French documentary crew that inspired this drama spent over a decade filming the actual trial. HBO Max built its version around that blurred line between documentary and reenactment. | © HBO Max
Gaslit

8. Gaslit (2022)

Julia Roberts plays Martha Mitchell, the Attorney General's wife who called reporters at night to warn them about Watergate before most of Washington took her seriously. John Dean, played by Dan Stevens, later became one of the government's key witnesses against Nixon's inner circle. Mitchell coined the term "Martha Mitchell effect," now used in psychology to describe dismissing a true claim as delusion. She died in 1976, three years before Nixon's memoir barely mentioned her. | © Starz
The Serpent

7. The Serpent (2021)

Charles Sobhraj drugged and killed backpackers across Thailand, Nepal, and India through the 1970s, and Tahar Rahim plays him with almost no visible effort. Belgian diplomat Herman Knippenberg, portrayed by Billy Howle, pieced together Sobhraj's pattern using nothing but embassy paperwork and stubbornness. Sobhraj escaped prison in India in 1986 by drugging his guards during his own birthday party. He was finally caught again in Nepal in 2003, walking into a casino under his own name. | © Netflix
A Very English Scandal

6. A Very English Scandal (2018)

A closeted Liberal Party leader hiring a hitman to kill his former lover sounds invented, but Jeremy Thorpe actually stood trial for it in 1979. Hugh Grant plays Thorpe opposite Ben Whishaw as Norman Scott, the man Thorpe allegedly wanted dead. Thorpe was acquitted, though the trial ended his political career completely. John Preston's book supplied the source material, drawn from court transcripts most of Britain had forgotten existed. | © Amazon Prime Video
Cropped Inventing Anna

5. Inventing Anna (2022)

Anna Sorokin conned New York's elite while calling herself Anna Delvey, a fake German heiress with no real fortune. Julia Garner spent months on the accent alone, studying recordings of Sorokin's actual court appearances. Netflix opens every episode with the line "This story is completely true, except for all the parts that are totally made up." Sorokin was sentenced in 2019 to up to twelve years, though most of that got suspended. | © Netflix
Cropped We Crashed

4. WeCrashed (2022)

Adam Neumann convinced investors WeWork was worth 47 billion dollars right before it collapsed to nearly nothing. Jared Leto and Anne Hathaway play Neumann and his wife Rebekah, who once compared herself to Gwyneth Paltrow on camera. The real WeWork filing collapsed in 2019, taking Neumann's CEO job with it. Apple TV+ builds the whole thing around a marriage rather than a boardroom. | © Apple TV+
Cropped Dopesick

3. Dopesick (2021)

A doctor named Samuel Finnix is fictional, but the drug he prescribes was very real. Purdue Pharma pushed OxyContin as safe and non-addictive starting in 1996, backed by sales reps trained to downplay its risks. Michael Keaton plays Finnix and also served as an executive producer on the series. Purdue eventually pleaded guilty to federal criminal charges in 2020, three years before the show aired. | © Hulu
Cropped The Dropout

2. The Dropout (2022)

Elizabeth Holmes dropped out of Stanford at nineteen and built Theranos into a company valued at nine billion dollars. Amanda Seyfried lowered her voice by an octave to match Holmes's own unusual baritone. The technology behind Theranos never actually worked the way Holmes claimed on stage. A federal jury convicted her on four counts of fraud in January 2022, the same month the show premiered. | © Hulu
Chernobyl

1. Chernobyl (2019)

Valery Legasov recorded his account of the Chornobyl disaster on cassette tapes before he died in 1988, exactly two years after the explosion. Jared Harris plays him narrating the same warning almost line for line. HBO shot most of the series in Lithuania, at a nuclear plant built with the same Soviet reactor design. Craig Mazin has said he wrote the finale around Legasov's real courtroom testimony, word for word. | © HBO
