15 Famous Movie Twists That Were Obvious From the Start

1-15

We all saw it coming.

TV Shows & Movies - October 29th 2026, 19:00 GMT+1
Star Wars Episode V The Empire Strikes Back

15. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

Nobody wants to hear this about The Empire Strikes Back, but Vader drops hints long before the elevator shaft scene. He spares Luke's life in weirdly specific ways, obsesses over him instead of the Rebellion at large, and the whole galaxy keeps circling back to one family. Obi-Wan's old lies only sound shocking if you ignore how loud the movie was being the whole time. The reveal works emotionally, but it was never the blindside people remember it as. | © 20th Century Fox
The Good Place

14. The Good Place (2016-2020)

Give The Good Place credit for commitment, because that neighborhood is suspicious from the pilot onward. Everything is a little too curated, every neighbor a little too conveniently placed, and Michael's explanations come a beat too fast whenever Eleanor asks questions. A show about moral philosophy was never going to let its premise be exactly what it looked like. The twist lands well, but the frozen yogurt shop alone should've tipped off half the audience. | © NBC
Cropped The Book of Eli

13. The Book of Eli (2010)

Denzel Washington plays Eli like a man memorizing a room instead of looking at it, and that's the whole tell. He reads by touch more than sight, never reacts to visual threats the way a sighted man would, and the camera lingers on details that only matter if you're paying attention. The Book of Eli wants the blindness reveal to recontextualize the entire film. It mostly just confirms what his body language already gave away an hour earlier. | © Warner Bros. Pictures
Tom holland Spider Man Far From Home 2019 1

12. Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)

Quentin Beck talks like a guy who's rehearsed his own origin story, which is exactly what Mysterio is. Spider-Man: Far From Home hands him drone tech, a grudge against Stark, and illusions that are a little too convenient for a supposed hero from another dimension. Peter's hesitance around him isn't subtlety, it's the movie quietly agreeing with the audience. By the time the mirror maze shows up, the con has been obvious for a while. | © Sony Pictures Releasing
Knives Out

11. Knives Out (2019)

Ransom Drysdale sulks through half of Knives Out like a man with something to protect, not just a bad attitude. He's the only Thrombey who skips the group interrogation energy and goes straight to defensive, which is a strange choice for someone supposedly innocent. Every scene he's in plays like foreshadowing dressed up as comic relief. The family drama distracts plenty of viewers, but Ransom's motive is sitting in plain sight the entire runtime. | © Lionsgate
Get Out

10. Get Out (2017)

A charity auction for a blind man's body should not feel subtle, yet that is the scene Jordan Peele hands viewers a full act before the truth drops. Missy's teacup, the groundskeeper's late-night sprint, the party guests grabbing Chris's arm like inventory. Get Out plants its horror in plain sight because the real target is how easily everyone around Chris explains it away. By the time the auction paddles go up, the mystery was never really a mystery. | © Universal Pictures
Frozen

9. Frozen (2013)

Hans spends most of Frozen finishing Anna's sentences and reciting vows to a woman he met hours earlier. That kind of instant devotion is a red flag in any Disney movie, let alone one that keeps winking at fairy tale shortcuts. He is charming right up until the moment he is not, and the shift barely requires rewriting the character. Disney gave the villain's game away in the first duet. | © Walt Disney Studios
Cropped The Usual Suspects

8. The Usual Suspects (1995)

Verbal Kint narrates nearly all of The Usual Suspects, which should be the first clue something is off. He builds Keyser Soze out of office furniture and a coffee mug while a detective takes dictation two feet away. The entire monologue is a man inventing his own alibi out loud. Once the fax machine spits out those names, the con stops being clever and starts being obvious in hindsight. | © Gramercy Pictures
Scream

7. Scream (1996)

Billy Loomis cannot stop being suspicious, even by slasher movie standards. He vanishes right before Casey's murder, shows up soaked and jittery, and delivers a eulogy for Sidney's mother that sounds rehearsed. Scream wants you to doubt him and then feel silly for doubting him, but the doubt never really goes away. Stu gets the twitchy comic relief edit specifically so Billy can hide in a performance that was never that hidden. | © Dimension Films
Cropped The Prestige

6. The Prestige (2006)

Two magicians, one trick, and a movie that keeps showing you the method without naming it. Christopher Nolan cuts between Borden's diary and his daily life so often that the double act practically introduces itself. Alfred Borden flinches at being called by name, ages differently in scenes shot weeks apart, and somehow is everywhere at once. The Prestige dresses its reveal up in misdirection, but the seams were always visible for anyone actually counting. | © Warner Bros. Pictures
The Others

5. The Others (2001)

A house with every curtain drawn and a family that flinches at sunlight should raise questions long before The Others answers them. Grace keeps her children locked indoors for a "condition" that conveniently explains away every ghostly thump and voice. Servants who seem to know more than they say, a piano that plays itself, none of it reads as subtle. The movie plays fair with its clues, but it never really hides them either. | © Dimension Films
The Village

4. The Village (2004)

Nobody in this supposedly 19th-century village questions why the "monsters" only attack at the treeline and never actually kill anyone. The Village spends two hours building a horror atmosphere around rules that collapse the moment you ask who's enforcing them. Edward Walker's elders flinch at specific modern words, Ivy stumbles into fencing and zippers near the forest's edge, and the costumes never quite commit to a real era. Shyamalan built a mystery box with the lid already cracked open. | © Buena Vista Pictures
Shutter Island

3. Shutter Island (2010)

Teddy Daniels cannot stop seeing his dead wife, hearing phantom explosions, and losing time in ways that go well past grief. Shutter Island frames every one of these breaks as a detective's hunch, but they play more like a diagnosis. Doctors who speak to him in riddles, a island staff that seems to be running a script just for him, it adds up fast for anyone paying attention. Scorsese shoots the whole thing like a fever dream, which is exactly what gives it away. | © Paramount Pictures
Fight Club 1999

2. Fight Club (1999)

A man who shows up only when the narrator blacks out is not a difficult riddle to solve. Fight Club hands viewers Tyler Durden's habit of vanishing the instant anyone else gets involved, then expects shock when the two turn out to share a body. Marla's confusion about which man she's talking to becomes a dead giveaway well before the big reveal. Fincher stages it as rebellion against conformity, but the mystery itself was never built to last. | © 20th Century Fox
Cropped The Sixth Sense

1. The Sixth Sense (1999)

Malcolm Crowe never eats, never touches another adult, and spends the entire runtime talking to exactly one person who can see him. The Sixth Sense leans so hard on its color-coded ghost rules that the twist practically narrates itself halfway through. Cole's warning about dead people who don't know they're dead is basically a spoiler dressed up as dialogue. Shyamalan's trick worked once on unsuspecting audiences, but the seams show on every rewatch. | © Buena Vista Pictures
