15 Holiday Movies That Are Secretly Terrible

1-15

Not so merry.

Home Sweet Home Alone

15. Home Sweet Home Alone (2021)

Nobody asked for a new kid to replace Kevin McCallister, yet Home Sweet Home Alone handed us one anyway. The booby traps get meaner, the stakes feel smaller, and the "burglars" this time are a couple just trying to get their family heirloom back. Swapping sympathy for slapstick kills the one thing that made the original work. Nostalgia alone cannot carry a movie that misunderstands its own premise this badly. | © Disney+
Ill Be Home for Christmas

14. I'll Be Home for Christmas (1998)

Jonathan Taylor Thomas plays a rich kid who fakes his own death to get home for the holidays. Read that sentence again, because I'll Be Home for Christmas builds an entire plot around a prank so cruel it borders on sociopathic. He spends the runtime covered in tar and feathers, chasing redemption the script never really earns. Family comedies need likable leads, and this one forgot to write one. | © Walt Disney Pictures
The Santa Clause 3 The Escape Clause

13. The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause (2006)

By the third installment, The Santa Clause franchise had run out of anything new to say. Tim Allen's Santa fights off Jack Frost while juggling a "time stands still" gimmick that exists purely to pad the runtime. Every joke lands exactly where you expect it to, which is the real problem. A trilogy that started with some charm ends on autopilot. | © Walt Disney Pictures
Cropped Home Alone 3

12. Home Alone 3 (1997)

Macaulay Culkin walked away, and Home Alone 3 walked right into the gap he left behind. Alex D. Linz plays a new kid defending a different house from a new set of bumbling crooks, and the formula feels copied rather than continued. The traps still hurt, the adults are still cartoonishly dumb, but none of it carries the warmth of the first two films. Franchise fatigue rarely looks this obvious this early. | © 20th Century Fox
Deck the Halls

11. Deck the Halls (2006)

Two suburban dads go to war over Christmas lights, and that premise alone tells you where this is headed. Deck the Halls stretches a one-note rivalry between Danny DeVito and Matthew Broderick across ninety minutes of increasingly dumb escalation. The jokes rely on property damage standing in for actual wit. Holiday spirit gets buried under a feud nobody has fun watching. | © 20th Century Fox
Fred Claus

10. Fred Claus (2007)

A grown man resenting his brother for being Santa Claus is a premise with real bite. Fred Claus throws that away for pratfalls and a sibling-rivalry plot that resolves exactly how you expect. Vince Vaughn talks fast and mugs harder, but the jokes thin out long before the sleigh takes off. What's left is a Christmas movie that forgot to make its North Pole feel like magic. | © Warner Bros.
Jingle All The Way

9. Jingle All the Way (1996)

Arnold Schwarzenegger sprinting through malls to find a sold-out action figure should be funnier than it ends up being. Jingle All the Way has a sharp idea buried inside it, a jab at parents losing their minds over consumer garbage every December. Instead the movie leans on shoving matches and pepper spray gags that wear out fast. The satire is there if you squint, but the slapstick stomps all over it. | © 20th Century Fox
Four Christmases

8. Four Christmases (2008)

Four households, one couple, zero patience left by the second stop. Four Christmases stacks Vince Vaughn, Reese Witherspoon, Robert Duvall, and Sissy Spacek into a script that never trusts any of them to be interesting. Every family is a broad stereotype and every joke lands exactly where you'd guess. A cast this stacked deserved material that wasn't written on autopilot. | © New Line Cinema
Surviving Christmas

7. Surviving Christmas (2004)

Ben Affleck and James Gandolfini bribe a dysfunctional family to fake Christmas cheer, and somehow that premise curdles fast. Surviving Christmas needs its lead to be charming despite his money and his meddling. He isn't. The whole thing plays less like a comedy about loneliness and more like a hostage situation with tinsel. | © DreamWorks Pictures
Christmas With The Kranks

6. Christmas with the Kranks (2004)

Skipping Christmas sounds like a reasonable plan until the neighbors get involved. Christmas with the Kranks turns that setup into ninety minutes of forced caroling, fake snow, and a community that treats one couple's vacation choice like a personal betrayal. Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis sell the panic well, but the jokes rarely rise above shrill. The movie wants to be about resisting holiday pressure while bowing completely to it. | © Revolution Studios
Bad Santa 2

5. Bad Santa 2 (2016)

Thirteen years passed between Bad Santa and this sequel, and it shows in all the wrong ways. The foulmouthed charm that made the original work gets swapped for louder cursing and meaner gags, like the writers confused volume with edge. Kathy Bates shows up as Willie's mother and gets stuck playing the same one-note joke for ninety minutes. What made the first film funny was its tiny flicker of heart, and this one cuts that out completely. | © Broad Green Pictures
Amy Mitchell A Bad Moms Christmas

4. A Bad Moms Christmas (2017)

Three moms blowing up their own holiday traditions sounded like a decent follow-up to the first Bad Moms. Instead the sequel just adds three more moms, as if stacking the cast fixes a thin script. Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, and Kathryn Hahn all return, but their chemistry gets drowned out by subplots nobody needed. More actresses on the poster does not mean more laughs in the theater. | © STX Entertainment
Cropped Love the Coopers

3. Love the Coopers (2015)

Love the Coopers wants to be the next great ensemble Christmas movie, the kind with a cast so stacked nobody thinks to check the script. Diane Keaton, John Goodman, Alan Arkin, Amanda Seyfried, Olivia Wilde. That lineup alone sold tickets, which is probably the point, since the actual story is a grab bag of family dysfunction clichés wrapped in narration nobody asked for. Good actors cannot fix dialogue this hollow no matter how hard they try. | © CBS Films

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms

2. The Nutcracker and the Four Realms (2018)

Picture a Christmas movie that spends more money on set design than on making its characters matter. That is The Nutcracker and the Four Realms in a sentence. Mackenzie Foy wanders through four visually dazzling worlds chasing a plot that barely holds together, while Keira Knightley's performance feels like it wandered in from an entirely different movie. Beautiful production design cannot substitute for a story with actual stakes. | © Walt Disney Studios
Cropped Red One

1. Red One (2024)

Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans running around an action blockbuster version of the North Pole should sound fun on paper. It does not translate that way on screen. Red One throws a massive budget at chase scenes and CGI elves while completely forgetting to make any of it feel like Christmas. Spectacle without warmth is just noise with a bow on it. | © Amazon MGM Studios
