15 Live-Action Adaptations That Completely Missed the Point

1-15

Got the story, lost the soul.

The Dark Tower 2017

15. The Dark Tower (2017)

Eight books, one 95 minute runtime, and a decision to treat Roland's entire saga as a footnote to Jake's subplot. The Dark Tower had decades of mythology to pull from and chose to sand down nearly all of it. Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey show up fully committed to a story that never bothers explaining its own stakes. Stephen King fans got a trailer's worth of ideas stretched thin and called a franchise starter. | © Sony Pictures
Max Payne

14. Max Payne (2008)

Max Payne spent the original games narrating his own life like a man drowning in cheap whiskey and worse luck. That voice, the one thing holding the whole bleak world together, barely survives the jump to screen. What's left is snow, slow motion, and Mark Wahlberg looking tired in a hallway full of Norse mythology that never earns its place. The comic book panels are still there, but the soul behind them checked out early. | © 20th Century Fox
Artemis Fowl

13. Artemis Fowl (2020)

Nobody asked for a version of Artemis Fowl who's nice. The books spent their first act establishing a twelve year old criminal mastermind extorting fairies for gold, and the movie hands us a kid who just wants to find his dad. Josh Gad narrates like he wandered in from a different production entirely. Fans waited over a decade for this adaptation and got a character they didn't recognize by the ten minute mark. | © Disney
Borderlands

12. Borderlands (2024)

A cast this stacked usually signals confidence, not panic, yet Borderlands feels like nobody involved had played the games. Cate Blanchett and Kevin Hart deliver lines that sound written for a different, blander franchise. The chaos, the gore, the jokes that only land because they're mean, all of it got replaced with something safe enough for a Tuesday matinee. Vault hunters deserved better than a PG-13 fan fiction of themselves. | © Lionsgate
The Super Mario Bros Movie

11. The Super Mario Bros. Movie (1993)

Dinosaurs evolved from Brooklyn plumbers in a fungus-choked dystopia, and somehow that's the least strange part of this movie. Super Mario Bros. took a bright, simple platformer and buried it under industrial sets and Dennis Hopper playing a lizard mobster. Bob Hoskins reportedly called it the worst thing he ever did, and the final cut backs him up. Thirty years later it still stands as proof that faithfulness was never even attempted. | © Buena Vista Pictures
Monster Hunter

10. Monster Hunter (2020)

Tanks and assault rifles show up before any actual monster does, which tells you everything about this one's priorities. Monster Hunter built its name on gear crafted from the beasts you hunted, a loop that gave every kill weight and purpose. The movie swaps that entirely for a soldiers-stranded-in-another-world plot that could belong to any generic action flick. Milla Jovovich firing machine guns at a Diablos is a scene that exists, and somehow still isn't the strangest choice here. | © Sony Pictures Releasing
Death Note

9. Death Note (2017)

Light Yagami's entire appeal was the chess match, not the body count. Death Note the anime spent episodes on quiet psychological warfare between Light and L, two minds trying to outthink each other in silence. Netflix's version rushes through that tension and leans on gore and teenage romance instead. Losing the mental duel means losing the reason anyone cared about Light in the first place. | © Netflix
Resident Evil

8. Resident Evil (2002)

Survival horror meant exactly that in the original games, resource management and dread in equal measure. Resident Evil on screen trades that slow-burn panic for Milla Jovovich doing laser hallway acrobatics against the Red Queen. There's barely a herb to manage or a door puzzle in sight. What's left is a solid action movie wearing the skin of something that used to make players nervous to turn a corner. | © Screen Gems
Cropped Percy Jackson the Olympians The Lightning Thief

7. Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (2010)

A twelve-year-old boy got aged into a teenager, and that one change rewired the entire story. Percy's arc in Rick Riordan's books works because he's a kid barely holding it together, not a confident high schooler cracking jokes. The Lightning Thief also drops Clarisse, shuffles the prophecy, and skips the journey to the Underworld almost entirely. Readers who grew up on these books watched a mythology get flattened into generic teen adventure filler. | © 20th Century Fox
The Last Airbender

6. The Last Airbender (2010)

Fans had one request going in: let Aang be funny and let the bending look like martial arts. The Last Airbender delivered neither, draining Aang's humor completely and restaging every bending sequence as stiff, slow-motion posing. Whitewashing the main cast made the backlash worse before a single review even landed. M. Night Shyamalan took a show built on warmth and humor and returned it as something cold enough to forget it was ever a comedy too. | © Paramount Pictures
Cropped Dragonball Evolution

5. Dragonball Evolution (2009)

Goku lost his tail, his grandpa's death, and basically everything that made him Goku. Dragonball Evolution turned a story about training, rivalry, and absurd power escalation into a teen romance with glowing energy balls tacked on. Piccolo shows up looking like a cosplayer who lost a bet, and Master Roshi barely registers. Twenty years from now people will still bring this up as the moment Hollywood proved it hadn't actually watched the source material. | © 20th Century Fox
Ghost in the Shell

4. Ghost in the Shell (2017)

Motoko Kusanagi's entire arc in the original Ghost in the Shell was about questioning whether a human mind in a machine body still counts as human. The 2017 version keeps the visuals, the rain-soaked neon, the shell, and quietly drops the philosophy that made any of it matter. Scarlett Johansson spends the runtime looking contemplative in front of CGI holograms instead of wrestling with actual existential dread. Style without the substance isn't an adaptation, it's a trailer stretched to two hours. | © Paramount Pictures
Assassins Creed

3. Assassin's Creed (2016)

Here's a bold move: adapt a video game built entirely around climbing buildings and stabbing templars by spending half your runtime in a sterile lab with Michael Fassbender strapped to a machine. Assassin's Creed treats its present-day scenes like they're the main event, which is exactly backwards from what players ever wanted. The parkour sequences look great in isolation, but they're buried under Abstergo boardroom meetings nobody asked to sit through. A game franchise built on momentum got adapted into something that keeps hitting pause on itself. | © 20th Century Fox
Halo

2. Halo (2022)

Master Chief talks. A lot. That single choice undoes the mystery that made the character work for two decades across Halo's games, where the helmet never came off and the silence did the heavy lifting. The show hands him a love interest, a face reveal, and a personality that feels bolted on rather than earned. Spartans were supposed to be myths in armor, not guys working through their feelings on basic cable. | © Paramount+
Cowboy Bebop netflix

1. Cowboy Bebop (2021)

Spike Spiegel's whole deal was a kind of tired cool, a guy drifting through space jazz and regret without ever looking like he was trying. Netflix's Cowboy Bebop swaps that melancholy for quips and slapstick, turning a show about loneliness into something closer to a sitcom with spaceships. John Cho works hard, but the show around him keeps undercutting its own stillness with jokes that don't land. The anime understood silence as a tool, and the remake never figured out how to sit in it. | © Netflix
