The 15 Most Overrated Shows We Wish People Would Shut up About

1-15

Nazarii Verbitskiy Nazarii Verbitskiy
TV Shows & Movies - October 3rd 2026, 21:00 GMT+2
Abbott Elementary

15. Abbott Elementary (2021-present)

Ava’s spectacular lack of professionalism supplies some of Abbott Elementary’s sharpest comedy, which is awkward for a show so often celebrated for its wholesome heart. The Philadelphia school setting gives familiar workplace plots real stakes, but Janine and Gregory’s romantic hesitation follows a well-worn sitcom syllabus. An excellent ensemble can make that comforting; it doesn’t automatically make it groundbreaking. | © Warner Bros. Television

Dexter

14. Dexter (2006-2013)

Michael C. Hall makes Dexter Morgan’s private calculations so entertaining that it’s easy to overlook how often the surrounding police work helps him out. A colleague gets suspicious, an investigation closes in, and another escape route materializes. The Trinity storyline earns its reputation, but praising the entire original run on that basis gives an awful lot of narrative convenience a free pass. | © Showtime

Cropped Severance

13. Severance (2022-present)

Lumon has apparently severed its employees from their memories and its audience from a straightforward answer. Severance’s divided identities raise fascinating questions about consent, grief, and who gets to own a person’s time. Yet its carefully rationed revelations can make watching feel like waiting for clearance. The production design deserves admiration without every mysterious office accessory becoming evidence of unparalleled genius. | © Fifth Season

Stranger Things

12. Stranger Things (2016-2022)

Remember when finding one missing kid could sustain Stranger Things? The fourth season divides its attention between Hawkins, California, and a Soviet prison, with a finale running well over two hours. There’s impressive filmmaking inside that sprawl, especially around Max, but the intimacy keeps competing with franchise maintenance. Friendship shouldn’t need quite so much supernatural administration before it can move us. | © 21 Laps Entertainment

The Boys

11. The Boys (2019-)

For a series so good at mocking superhero franchises, The Boys develops a suspicious fondness for keeping its marquee villain available. Antony Starr makes Homelander terrifying, but the third season’s Soldier Boy confrontation exposes the strain of building toward a showdown while preserving the central rivalry. Add increasingly elaborate bodily destruction, and the supposed antidote to superhero excess starts requiring its own antidote. | © Sony Pictures Television

Sons of Anarchy

10. Sons of Anarchy (2008-2014)

Jax Teller spends so much time discussing a better future for his family that you start wishing someone would confiscate his motorcycle and book the moving van. Sons of Anarchy makes his inability to escape violence its central tragedy, then stretches that tragedy through accumulating betrayals and revenge missions. Katey Sagal gives the chaos conviction, even when another catastrophe produces exhaustion instead of heartbreak. | © FX Productions

Friends

9. Friends (1994-2004)

Nobody needs to apologize for rewatching Friends over dinner. The trouble starts when familiarity becomes proof that no sitcom has ever done relationships better. Ross and Rachel’s romantic stalemate drags through increasingly elaborate detours, while Joey’s intelligence becomes a renewable punchline. Those six performers have extraordinary chemistry; sometimes they’re using it to make yesterday’s character flaw pass for tonight’s fresh joke. | © Warner Bros. Television

Peaky Blinders

8. Peaky Blinders (2013-2022)

Cillian Murphy could make reading a parking ticket look like the opening move in a criminal conspiracy. Peaky Blinders relies heavily on that gift as Tommy Shelby’s ambitions expand from Birmingham gang politics into increasingly grand schemes. The trauma beneath his composure gives the performance substance, but all those portentous entrances can leave the storytelling looking rather less formidable than the tailoring. | © Caryn Mandabach Productions

Succession

7. Succession (2018-2023)

The Roy children can turn a business discussion into a childhood grievance before the drinks arrive. Succession captures that arrested development brilliantly, but its recurring alliances and humiliations can make individual stretches feel interchangeable. Yes, their inability to grow is intentional. That doesn’t oblige everyone to find each fresh round of Kendall’s ambition and Roman’s defensive cruelty equally absorbing, however exquisite the insults. | © HBO

Big Bang Theory

6. The Big Bang Theory (2007-2019)

The equations on the whiteboards received expert attention. The relationship jokes could have used comparable scrutiny. The Big Bang Theory repeatedly mines Sheldon’s rigidity, Leonard’s insecurity, and Penny’s differences from the group until recognition starts doing the work of surprise. Jim Parsons is a precise comic performer, but a lovingly delivered reference to geek culture still needs a joke attached to it. | © Warner Bros. Television

Ted lasso

5. Ted Lasso (2020-2023)

Kindness isn’t Ted Lasso’s problem; taking the scenic route to every reassuring message is. The third season finds ample room for sprawling subplots while leaving Nate’s departure from West Ham offscreen. That imbalance matters in a comedy selling emotional growth as its main attraction. Jason Sudeikis brings vulnerability to the optimism, but even a generous audience can want fewer speeches and more actual drama. | © Warner Bros. Television

Game Of Thrones

4. Game of Thrones (2011-2019)

Blaming everything on the finale gives Game of Thrones an undeserved alibi. The cracks were already visible when the expedition beyond the Wall turned a desperate rescue into a test of how quickly ravens and dragons could cross the map. Earlier political maneuvering made consequences feel unavoidable; later spectacle increasingly depended on overlooking logistics. The dragons got bigger while the room for believable decisions shrank. | © HBO

Family Guy

3. Family Guy (1999-2022)

A brilliant thirty-second clip is a generous advertisement for an uneven twenty-minute episode. Family Guy’s cutaways let it abandon almost any situation for a better joke, which also means the situation rarely needs to become interesting. Peter’s extended fights with the giant chicken embody the bargain: astonishing commitment to a gag whose length can become more memorable than whatever made it funny. | © 20th Television Animation

Euphoria

2. Euphoria (2019-2026)

Lexi’s lavish school play makes a useful metaphor for Euphoria: private suffering repackaged as a production everyone is expected to applaud. Zendaya gives Rue’s addiction frightening emotional specificity, yet the surrounding betrayals and sexual melodrama often compete to become the next spectacular image. Sam Levinson can make distress look mesmerizing. Whether all that attention helps us understand the person experiencing it is another question. | © HBO

Scrubs

1. Scrubs (2001-2010)

Scrubs could deliver a devastating hospital story, then spend the next episode asking us to find J.D.’s latest romantic selfishness adorable. That tension becomes harder to ignore across the original run, especially when his narration supplies a tidy lesson after untidy behavior. The strongest episodes earn their emotional impact; the weaker ones seem confident that a reflective voiceover and the right song will suffice. | © ABC Studios

1-15

“You just need to get through the first two seasons” is a pretty suspicious sales pitch for a supposed masterpiece. Between the endless recommendations and fans who treat criticism as a personal insult, these overrated TV shows come with more homework than entertainment. We’ve watched, we’ve heard the defenses, and we’d like permission to discuss literally anything else at dinner.
