TV Shows & Movies - October 17th 2026, 17:00 GMT+2
Inspector Gadget 2 2003 Gadget

15. Inspector Gadget 2 (2003) – Gadget

Matthew Broderick never came back for Inspector Gadget 2, so French Stewart took over the trench coat and the extending neck in 2003. The sequel skipped theaters entirely and went straight to video under Walt Disney Pictures. Stewart was best known at the time for the sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun. No one involved ever gave a public reason for the swap. | © Walt Disney Pictures
George of the Jungle 2 2003 George

14. George of the Jungle 2 (2003) – George

Christopher Showerman is built like a linebacker, which is probably why he got the loincloth for George of the Jungle 2. Brendan Fraser had carried the 1997 original to over $174 million worldwide. The 2003 follow-up dropped straight to DVD through Walt Disney Pictures instead. Showerman has said in interviews he studied Fraser's physical comedy closely before filming started. | © Walt Disney Pictures
Return to Halloweentown

13. Return to Halloweentown (2006) – Marnie

Sara Paxton stepped into the role of Marnie Piper for Return to Halloweentown, the fourth film in the series. Kimberly J. Brown had played the character since the original 1998 TV movie. Disney Channel made the switch without ever addressing it onscreen or in promotion. Brown has said publicly she wasn't informed before the recasting happened. | © Disney Channel
Robocop

12. RoboCop 3 (1993) – RoboCop

Peter Weller walked away after two outings in the suit, leaving Robert John Burke to finish the trilogy in RoboCop 3. Orion Pictures delayed the film for nearly two years before its 1993 release, by which point Weller had moved on. Burke later said the suit was so restrictive he could barely hear his own cues. The character's voice even sounds different, since Burke's vocal delivery replaced Weller's entirely. | © Orion Pictures
The Twilight Saga Eclipse 2010 Victoria

11. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (2010) – Victoria

Rachelle Lefevre shot scenes for Eclipse before Summit Entertainment replaced her with Bryce Dallas Howard over a scheduling conflict. The studio claimed she couldn't rearrange dates to film Barney's Version, a claim Lefevre publicly disputed. She said she'd offered to adjust her schedule and was dropped anyway. Howard played Victoria for the character's final two appearances in the franchise. | © Summit Entertainment
Hannibal 2001 Clarice Starling

10. Hannibal (2001) – Clarice Starling

Jodie Foster turned down Hannibal in 2001 because she objected to the direction Clarice Starling's story took. Julianne Moore stepped in and played the role with a different accent and a harder edge. The film was based on Thomas Harris's 1999 novel, which Foster also reportedly disliked. Moore has said she didn't try to imitate Foster's performance at all. | © MGM
Batman Forever 1995 Harvey Dent

9. Batman Forever (1995) – Harvey Dent

Two-Face only exists on screen because Billy Dee Williams played Harvey Dent back in 1989's Batman, setting up a transformation that never came. By the time Batman Forever arrived in 1995, Tommy Lee Jones had the part instead, scars and all. Williams has said in interviews he expected the call to return. It never came, and nobody at Warner Bros. ever explained why. | © Warner Bros.
Batman Forever 1995 Batman

8. Batman Forever (1995) – Batman

Michael Keaton walked away from the Batsuit after reading the script for Batman Forever, reportedly put off by the tonal shift Joel Schumacher was pushing toward. Val Kilmer wore the cowl instead for the 1995 film, which leaned hard into neon and camp. Keaton had played the character across two films under Tim Burton. Kilmer lasted exactly one movie before Batman changed hands again. | © Warner Bros.
Back to the Future Part II 1989 Jennifer

7. Back to the Future Part II (1989) – Jennifer

Elisabeth Shue plays Jennifer in Back to the Future Part II, though Claudia Wells originated the role in the 1985 original. Wells left the franchise to care for her mother, who was ill at the time. The 1989 sequel opens by literally recasting her mid-story, picking up where the first film left off. Shue kept the role for 1990's Part III as well. | © Universal Pictures
The Mummy

6. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008) – Evelyn

Maria Bello takes over as Evelyn O'Connell in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, a part Rachel Weisz had played twice before. Weisz chose not to return for the 2008 sequel, citing a desire to focus on other projects. The film swapped actresses but kept the character's husband and son unchanged. Bello voiced the role with a noticeably different accent than Weisz had used. | © Universal Pictures
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban 2004 Dumbledore

5. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) – Dumbledore

Richard Harris died in October 2002, just months after finishing his second turn as Dumbledore. The role passed to Michael Gambon for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, released in 2004 by Warner Bros. Gambon has said he never met Harris and didn't study his performance before stepping in. He played the headmaster in six more films, ending with Deathly Hallows Part 2 in 2011. | © Warner Bros.
The Avengers 2012 Bruce Banner

4. The Avengers (2012) – Bruce Banner

Edward Norton played Bruce Banner once, in 2008's The Incredible Hulk, and never returned to the role. Marvel Studios has said publicly the split came down to creative differences over Norton's involvement in the writing process. Mark Ruffalo took over for 2012's The Avengers and has played the character in every Marvel film since. Norton's version of Banner has never been mentioned on screen again. | © Walt Disney Studios
The Dark Knight 2008 Rachel Dawes

3. The Dark Knight (2008) – Rachel Dawes

Rachel Dawes exists in exactly two Christopher Nolan Batman films, played by two different actresses. Katie Holmes originated the role in 2005's Batman Begins, then passed on returning for the sequel. Maggie Gyllenhaal stepped in for 2008's The Dark Knight, released by Warner Bros. Holmes has said scheduling conflicts with other projects kept her from coming back. | © Warner Bros.
Captain America Brave New World 2025 Thaddeus Ross

2. Captain America: Brave New World (2025) – Thaddeus Ross

William Hurt first played Thaddeus Ross in 2008's The Incredible Hulk and kept the role across four more Marvel films. He died in March 2022, leaving the character without an actor mid-franchise. Harrison Ford took over for 2025's Captain America: Brave New World, distributed by Walt Disney Studios. Ford also voices Ross as the Red Hulk, a transformation the earlier films never touched. | © Walt Disney Studios
Iron Man 2 2010 Rhodey

1. Iron Man 2 (2010) – Rhodey

Terrence Howard signed on to play Rhodey for 2008's Iron Man under a multi-picture deal with Marvel. By the time 2010's Iron Man 2 went into production, the role belonged to Don Cheadle instead. Howard has said publicly he was paid a fraction of what he'd been promised for the sequel. Cheadle kept the role through every Marvel appearance since, including Armor Wars in development. | © Walt Disney Studios
