Who Are The Players Who Made a Name for Themselves This Year?
Team Liquid had a respectable performance, and their AD carry deserves a ton of credit for it. Tactical started the year as a TL Academy player, subbing in for the underperforming Yiliang "Peter" "Doublelift" Peng only to be put back on the bench after two good games in the spring. In the summer, Tactical was back with a vengeance and he only stepped up on the Worlds stage. We knew Selfmade was going to be good. Analysts knew Selfmade was going to be good. Few expected him to be AS good. Fnatic’s jungler came into a group which (on paper) had four good teams and many times he bodied the competition. Then, he led Fnatic against Top Esports - and despite the Chinese champions having an advantage in multiple the solo lanes, they had to claw their way back into the series from a 0-2 with miracles from jungling legend Karsa. From the streets to the finals, huanfeng’s story is an impressive one - and this Worlds has been the best chapter yet. Coming in as an fifth wheel on a team few expected much of, huanfeng had multiple standout games, especially in Suning’s rematch against a Top Esports that had smashed them in the LPL semifinals. Canyon is the only player on this list who actually had a Worlds appearance but after DAMWON’s disappointing quarterfinal in 2019, we finally saw him live up to his potential - being a World Champion. After scoring the first ever pentakill for a jungler in the LCK, he came to Worlds as the Korean champion and reminded everyone just what that means. In a region famous for explosive top lakers, Bin went above and beyond. Celebrating his 18th birthday just days before his team played its first Worlds game, he came in as a hot new prospect and he proved his supporters right with multiple standout games. It was Bin who crippled G2’s comeback in Suning’s second game against the LEC champion with a sublime Gangplank ambush. It was Bin who styled on Bai "369" Jia-Hao in Suning’s rematch with Top Esports in the semifinals. Then, in the finals, it was Bin whose Fiora led the charge in Sunings’ single win against DAMWON, ending the game after the first Pentakill in a Worlds final game. Image credit: Riot Games
