The Squid Game universe is expanding.
A US Squid Game spin–off is officially in development, and none other than the mastermind behind Gone Girl and Mindhunter, David Fincher, is reportedly leading the project.
David Fincher Expected To Direct The Pilot
Fincher is expected to direct the pilot episode and may be involved as an executive producer. This would mark another collaboration between the director and Netflix, where he’s already produced several high–profile titles.
Cate Blanchett’s Cameo Was A Clue
Season three of Squid Game ended with a surprising appearance by Cate Blanchett, who plays ddakji in Los Angeles, echoing the recruitment scene from the original series. That final moment now appears to be more than a simple cameo – it may have been designed to quietly introduce the American version. It turns out that moment may have been less about the surprise and more about setting up what's next.
Production Could Begin By December
The spin–off is reportedly scheduled to start filming in December 2025, with Los Angeles as the main location. David Fincher is currently wrapping up another Netflix project, which would align with that timeline. The script is being written by Dennis Kelly, the creator of Utopia.
Not A Remake
The American version will not retell the original story. Instead, it will expand the universe with a new cast, new setting and new games. While it shares the same themes of economic desperation and survival, it is expected to reflect a different social and cultural landscape.
