Elon Musk’s gesture during Trump’s second inauguration in January continues to spark backlash months later. The moment, which many interpreted as a Nazi salute, still haunts his public image and fuels criticism of his growing political influence.

A Gesture That Won't Be Forgotten

At Donald Trump’s second inauguration on January 20, 2025, Elon Musk stepped on stage to celebrate his new government position. But it wasn’t his speech that drew global attention. As he addressed the audience, Musk placed a hand over his heart and then extended his arm outward, palm down, a gesture immediately compared to a Nazi salute.

Clips of the moment went viral, prompting outrage, especially in Germany, where the use of such symbols is strictly prohibited. Jewish organizations like the ADL first called it “awkward,” but later condemned Musk’s casual attitude and tasteless jokes about the incident.

Elon Pleads: “I’ve Never Hurt Anyone”

In a recent interview, Musk responded to the criticism by claiming he’s the real victim. “It’s a massive, violent reaction,” he said, referring to the backlash against Tesla and his political involvement. “I’ve never harmed anyone,” he added, insisting the gesture was meant as a sign of appreciation to the crowd.

Supporters Say The Media Twisted It

Elon's defenders quickly took to X, Reddit, and other platforms to push back. According to them, the gesture was misinterpreted and blown out of proportion by “legacy media.” Some insisted it was a “heartfelt thank–you,” while others accused critics of intentionally smearing Elon Musk due to his role in Trump’s administration.

Real–World Fallout for Tesla

The controversy hasn’t stayed online. In the months following the inauguration, Tesla has faced a wave of vandalism and protests across multiple countries, including Germany, France, and the United States. Charging stations were defaced, cars were targeted, and a movement called “Tesla Takedown” has begun calling for boycotts and protests.

Musk claims the attacks are being funded and organized by “larger forces,” though investigators have found no solid evidence of such coordination.

Whether the gesture was intentional or not, Musk’s response has only deepened the controversy. His decision to joke about the incident, saying on a podcast, “I did Nazi it coming”, triggered even more backlash. This isn't just about one gesture. It’s about what happens when powerful figures use fascist symbols and then act surprised when people are outraged.
