With over 210 million views on Netflix, the hype doesn’t seem to end anytime soon.
The urban-fantasy musical KPop Demon Hunters produced by Sony Pictures Animation was released on Netflix on June 20, 2025, and is on its way to reach a new record.
What The Movie Is About
The movie is about the female demon hunting K-Pop band – Huntr/x (Huntrix) – protecting the human world from the underworld and its demon king Gwi-Ma with a magical barrier: the Honmoon. It is strengthened by the voices of the three singers – Rumi, Mira and Zoey - and the connecting souls of their fans.
When a demon boy band called the Saja Boys is sent to destroy the Honmoon, one of its members, Jinu, discovers Rumis‘ secret – she is not only a demon hunter but half demon herself.
As the story continues, Rumi starts to question what she thought to know about demons, torn between her mission and her true self.
Will It Become Netflix's Number 1?
After reaching 9.2 million views in just three days, KPop Demon Hunters quickly became the most watched Netflix animated original film of all time.
Now, it is the 2nd most watched movie in Netflix's history, with over 210 million views. A bit more than 20 million views away from the current number one Red Notice, the movie has a good chance on overtaking it.
Breaking Records Like Crazy
As mentioned, KPop Demon Hunters is already the most-watched Netflix animated original film of all time. But it is not only the movie, that is going viral.
The movies‘ addicting soundtrack is all over the Billboard Hot 100, with 3 songs in the top 10 and 7 songs in the top 30. On the Billboard 200, the KPop Demon Hunters Soundtrack ranks second (August 22, 2025).
With songs like “Golden” – which is currently on top of the Spotify Charts (Global) – and “Your Idol”, the fictional K-Pop groups Huntr/x and Saja Boys already surpassed K-Pop bands like Blackpink and BTS as highest charting K-Pop groups in US Spotify history. Overall, 4 songs from the Kpop Demon Hunters‘ Soundtrack are still in the top 10 and 7 in the top 20 on Spotify (August 22, 2025).
Now, Netflix even organized live Sing Along Events – for the fans!
What Makes The Movie So Unique?
KPop Demon Hunters really felt special, thanks to the incredible animation, soundtrack and message of the movie: Don’t hide who you are and don’t let your mistakes define you. Also, it holds many cultural references by representing the K-Pop industry as well as folk tales like Jakho-do, the magpie and the tiger.
Something, that feels special to many viewers as well, is the way the female characters are portrayed. They are not the typical strong female characters we are used to these days, as briefly explained in a YouTube video on how Girl Power Should Feel Fun, Not Forced.
