With William Shatner, not only does one of the most recognizable icons in science fiction history turn 95, but also an accidental cult face of horror. The Canadian actor is best known worldwide as the legendary captain from the Star Trek franchise. Yet his career spans far more than this role it stretches over seven decades and includes film, television, music, literature, and even a journey into space.

Early Life

William Shatner was born on March 22, 1931, in Montreal, Canada, to Jewish immigrant parents from Europe. Even during his school years, he showed a keen interest in acting and theater.

He studied economics at McGill University but soon decided to pursue a career in acting. His first steps were on Canadian theater stages, later moving to American television in the 1950s.

Breakthrough With Star Trek And Journey Into Space

Shatner’s global breakthrough came in 1966 with his role as James T. Kirk in Star Trek. As captain of the USS Enterprise, he became the face of one of the most successful science-fiction franchises in history.

Although the original series lasted only three seasons, it evolved into a cultural phenomenon. Shatner returned to the role multiple times in the Star Trek films of the 1980s and 1990s, as well as in guest appearances in other franchise series.

Beyond Star Trek, he appeared in numerous other productions, including the legal drama Boston Legal, for which he won multiple Primetime Emmy Awards.

An extraordinary moment in Shatner’s life came in 2021. At the age of 90, he took a suborbital flight with the space company Blue Origin, becoming the oldest person ever to travel into space.

The flight symbolically connected his most famous role as Captain Kirk with real-life space exploration. After landing, Shatner spoke emotionally about the view of Earth from space and the planet’s fragility.

The Face Of A Horror Icon

For many years, a hidden Easter egg among horror fans: Shatner’s likeness also became the face of one of the most famous movie monsters of all time or rather, his mask. During preparations for the first Halloween film, production designer Tommy Lee Wallace bought a Captain Kirk mask at a costume shop, painted it white, slightly tousled the hair, and placed it on Michael Myers as he hunted Jamie Lee Curtis.

It wasn’t until many years later that Shatner himself learned his mask had inspired the decades-long success of the film’s killer. At first, he was reportedly shocked, but he later claimed that, one Halloween so he could remain anonymous he even walked down the street wearing the Michael Myers mask.

Controversies And Advocacy

Despite his widespread popularity, William Shatner has also been the subject of controversy throughout his career. Frequently discussed were conflicts with colleagues from the Star Trek universe, particularly his long-standing tense relationship with George Takei, who played Lieutenant Sulu. Both publicly criticized each other in interviews and autobiographies over the years.

Shatner’s reputation as a dominant and sometimes difficult colleague on set has also been noted. Some former co-stars recounted tensions during the filming of the original series. Additionally, some of his public statements often rather conservative, on social issues or Star Trek fandom occasionally sparked debate.

Outside of his career, Shatner has long been active in various social and charitable causes. He is particularly involved in animal welfare, supporting organizations like American Humane and contributing to projects for animal protection.

Another passion project is the charity event he founded, the Hollywood Charity Horse Show, which raises funds for children’s organizations and therapeutic riding programs.

A Pop Culture Legend

At 95 in 2026, William Shatner stands as one of the longest-living and most famous figures in international pop culture. His role as Captain Kirk has shaped generations of fans and left a lasting mark on science fiction.

Whether as an actor, author, host, or even a space traveler, Shatner has had an extraordinary career. His name remains inseparably linked to the vision that Star Trek has embodied since the 1960s: hope for a curious, science-driven future for humanity.
