Releasing a new Battle Royale title in 2025 is a risk, to say the least...

The Battlefield franchise might be taking another swing at the ever-competitive battle royale space – this time with Battlefield 6 reportedly lining up a free-to-play mode to rival Call of Duty: Warzone. Now, fresh leaks are adding even more weight to the rumors, including our first look at the supposed map and its intriguing name.
A Risky Move In A Crowded Genre
The genre’s golden age is already a few years behind us, but the competition is still fierce. Fortnite and PUBG kicked off the craze in the late 2010s, pulling millions of players into last-player-standing shootouts. Legacy shooters scrambled to join the gold rush: Counter-Strike had Danger Zone, Apex Legends carved out its corner, and Warzone became a pandemic-era juggernaut still going strong today. For any new contender, breaking through requires something truly special.
The story of Battlefield 6 so far is one of nostalgia and high-stakes reinvention. Developer DICE is pushing a back-to-basics approach: gritty visuals reminiscent of Battlefield 3 and 4, large-scale destruction, and the removal of controversial hero-style operators. Playtests have reportedly impressed insiders, showcasing vast maps and classic Battlefield chaos.
EA’s Big Ambition: 100 Million Players
Behind the scenes, though, EA is pushing for something far more ambitious. According to a recent Ars Technica report, the publisher wants Battlefield to rival Call of Duty’s reach, aiming for an eye-watering 100 million players. Internally, DICE developers are skeptical of hitting that milestone – but a free-to-play battle royale could be the ace up EA’s sleeve to expand the franchise’s player base dramatically.
The rumored plan mirrors Warzone’s playbook: Battlefield 6’s battle royale would launch as a standalone free-to-play experience, while the core game – traditional multiplayer modes and possibly a single-player campaign – remains a paid product. It’s a proven model, with microtransactions and seasonal content to keep players engaged (and spending).
First Look At The Battle Royale Map – And Its Name
Now, new leaks are painting a clearer picture. After the official reveal trailer dropped, reputable leaker Temporyal shared what appears to be the battle royale map, including its name: “Lyndon Beach.” According to Temporyal, the mode is currently labeled in-game as “Battlefield Royale.”
Here's a recreation of the Battle Royale map in Battlefield 6. The location appears to be called "Lyndon Beach". I've added a few points of interest for context. There are scattered hints of a metro system. The mode is currently labeled "Battlefield Royale" in-game. pic.twitter.com/3x00TWSYmE

The leaked map highlights a mix of large and small points of interest: a yacht marina, lighthouse, docks, a golf resort, and more than 20 additional hotspots, including a military base, a water treatment plant, a new residential area, and hints of a subway system. Temporyal noted that some locations were marked up for context, so the final version may look slightly different.

Mode Called Gauntlet Still In Play
Earlier leaks suggested the battle royale map might also be reused for a rumored mode called Gauntlet – smaller squad-based elimination matches, potentially inspired by The Finals’ mix of big maps and tight competitive objectives. If true, DICE could keep the battle royale map relevant through multiple modes, boosting replayability.
We might not have to wait long for more details. A multiplayer reveal event is set for July 31, 2025, where EA is expected to showcase new maps and modes. However, rumors say the battle royale mode itself might not launch alongside the main game – instead, it could arrive later as a major post-launch addition. After months of leaks, EA finally lifted the curtain on Battlefield 6 with its first trailer last week. While no official release date has been confirmed yet, leaker Temporyal claims the game will launch on October 10, 2025.
Can Battlefield Get It Right This Time?
The big question remains: can Battlefield finally nail the formula? Many fans still remember Firestorm, Battlefield V’s ill-fated battle royale mode that failed to pull players away from Fortnite and Warzone.
This time, DICE seems determined to learn from the past. Reports suggest a grittier, more grounded vibe to stand apart from Warzone’s wild crossovers and Fortnite’s colorful chaos – aiming instead to deliver a boots-on-the-ground war zone for players craving realism.
Will Players Show Up in 2025?
But is that enough? By 2025, Warzone will have celebrated its fifth anniversary, Fortnite will still be reinventing itself every season, and players have endless free-to-play options to choose from. For Battlefield to make a dent, DICE will need to deliver a genuinely compelling experience – and keep it fresh with consistent updates, tight gun play, and meaningful progression.
For now, none of this is officially confirmed. But if the leaks are accurate, Battlefield 6’s battle royale could be one of the most closely watched shooter launches in years – a massive gamble that could shape the franchise’s future for the next decade.
