After we previously got a brief glimpse of the new installment in the Silent Hill series, a new trailer and release date were revealed at the “State of Play”. What can we expect from the game?

Back To Japan

Silent Hill f will be the new installment in the horror game series. It clearly stands out from previous releases with its setting in 1960s Japan. We already know from the trailers that the game revolves around the girl Hinako Shimizu – she finds herself in the fictitious town of Ebisugaoka, which is very reminiscent of the existing town of Kanayama. There she has to fight her way through bloody monsters and grotesque creatures. The game's story was deliberately kept unclear.

What we do know: It will be about friendships, betrayal and closure with the past in some way. We can see this from the gameplay trailers via translation.

"100% Japanese Horror"

Konami apparently became increasingly dissatisfied with the fact that the game series is increasingly appealing to Western gamers and wanted to design the game as one hundred percent Japanese horror. To this end, they enlisted the help of Japanese author Ryukishi07, who is known in Japan for his visual novels. They felt they needed someone who “really understands Japanese horror”. The concept of the game is based on “horror in beauty”, and says that “when something becomes too beautiful and perfect, it becomes deeply disturbing”.

Ryukishi07 himself says that female characters have often had to endure a lot of suffering in the past. This game aims to change that: With Hinako Shimizu, he wants to create a protagonist who writes her own story instead of simply being “pulled along by it”.

Typical Silent Hill: Bloody And Brutal

Nevertheless, we want to preserve the concept of Silent Hill: The conflict between sins, dissatisfaction and conflict with oneself. To link everything together, Akira Yamaoka, who was responsible for the sound design in previous Silent Hill titles, was brought back on board. The disgusting creatures and bloody scenes are also part of the game series. In the trailers, we notice stitched-together figures, missing organs and, of course, lots of blood. However, players are already questioning how brutal the game will really be.

All we know at the moment is that Silent Hill f has a CERO rating of Z in Japan, which means that sales to minors are prohibited. In Europe it is classified as PEGI 18, in America ESRB gives the game a Mature rating, which is recommended for at least 17 year olds.

Banned In Australia?

However, the game was briefly in the headlines due to another country: The game originally received a “refused classification” rating from the Australian authority, which is basically the same as a ban. Australia has always been cautious when it comes to content in video games. As a result, there are some games that have only been released in a heavily censored form.

However, this all turned out to be a misunderstanding, as the authority itself confirmed that the game was being evaluated and took the original entry offline.

A decision will now be made on how the game, with its content containing “depictions of gender discrimination, child abuse, bullying, drug-induced hallucinations, torture and graphic violence”, will be rated.

Silent Hill f will be released on September 25, 2025 on PlayStation 5, Steam, Xbox Series X|S, Epic Games and the Microsoft Store.

What do you think? Are you already looking forward to the somewhat different Silent Hill?
