Hogwarts Legacy was one of the biggest video game hits of 2023. The game sold 22 million units in 2023 alone. Now it appears that the series could continue with an online multiplayer component.

Warner Bros. Plans Online RPG: Is Multiplayer Coming To Hogwarts Legacy 2?

Hogwarts Legacy delivered a richly detailed adaptation of the Harry Potter world and became a massive success as a result. Only recently, the action RPG surpassed 40 million units sold.

For a long time, the future of the series remained unclear, but Warner Bros. has since confirmed that a sequel is in development. This next installment could reportedly allow players to experience the world of Hogwarts together with friends for the first time. A new job listing from Warner Bros. Games points in that direction:

“Avalanche, a division of WB Games Inc., is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join our team of talented industry veterans working on a new online multiplayer RPG. This person will work closely with project engineering, art, and design leadership to architect and implement the backend infrastructure for an online multiplayer RPG.”

Whether this job listing is directly related to Hogwarts Legacy 2 has not been officially confirmed so far. It therefore remains to be seen whether the next installment will actually allow players to explore Hogwarts together with friends.

Why Multiplayer Can Add New Depth To Role-Playing Games

Multiplayer is becoming increasingly important in the gaming world. After all, titles like Counter-Strike or League of Legends have been among the most popular games for what feels like forever. In contrast, role-playing games remain predominantly single-player experiences. Perhaps it is time to loosen this tradition a bit. These games certainly have their own charm, but the option to explore such worlds together with friends would be a valuable addition.

Baldur’s Gate 3 impressively demonstrates how a role-playing game can gain additional depth through well-integrated multiplayer. It is rightly celebrated as one of the best RPGs of this generation, and it would still deserve that praise even without multiplayer. However, the option to return to the game world at any time with friends gives it a special replay value. Whether you are enjoying silly adventures together, with everyone playing something like a Halfling Barbarian, or seriously trying to conquer Honour Mode, multiplayer simply adds another dimension to the experience.

Of course, Baldur’s Gate 3 and Hogwarts Legacy are very different games. However, if a multiplayer mode is implemented well, it can add an extra layer to almost any game. That very additional dimension could also be an exciting step for the Hogwarts sequel.
