Imagine booting up your favorite game and suddenly realizing you’ve been banned for no reason. That’s exactly what many Rainbow Six Siege players experienced recently.
Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege was hacked on December 27. For some players, this was extremely frustrating, as their accounts were banned without any apparent reason, while others suddenly found themselves credited with enormous amounts of in-game currency. What initially appeared to be pure chaos ultimately turned out to be a targeted hacker attack.
When December 27 Shook Rainbow 6
Players noticed on December 27 that something was wrong. Across all platforms, strange messages began appearing in the in-game chat. Some players suddenly found large amounts of in-game currency added to their accounts, while others were unable to log in at all because their accounts had been banned without any apparent reason. In some cases, players even received rare skins. All of these incidents were ultimately traced back to a hacker attack that began that day.
Ubisoft responded swiftly by taking both the game servers and the marketplace for Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege offline. At the same time, the company announced that affected accounts would be rolled back to their state prior to the attack. Players who had already spent the credited in-game currency would not be penalized.
After the servers were taken offline, it became clear that the attack primarily targeted backend systems. The hackers carried out a range of interventions without following a consistent pattern. There were no obvious extortion attempts or demands; instead, the incident consisted of a series of isolated and uncoordinated actions. This suggests that the attackers were more interested in demonstrating unauthorized control over internal systems than in pursuing a coherent objective.
Speculation About An Internal Leak
Even without an official statement, the community has already begun speculating about how the attack may have occurred. According to a report by IBTimes.co.uk, the security group VX-Underground claims to have uncovered evidence suggesting that members of Ubisoft’s customer support staff may have accepted bribes in exchange for granting access to player accounts. As a result, sensitive data such as players’ real names and IP addresses may also have been leaked.
Ubisoft has not confirmed these allegations so far. Whether the incident involved a deliberate insider abuse, a combination of multiple security vulnerabilities, or unsubstantiated speculation remains unclear at this point. What is clear, however, is that the attack went far beyond ordinary cheating incidents and raises serious questions about the protection of internal access privileges at Ubisoft. A full explanation is still pending.
