The Witcher 4: Ciri gets nerfed?

The Witcher 4 got new hype with a cinematic trailer shown at The Game Awards – but wasn't Ciri basically a goddess at the end of Witcher 3? There's a solution to that.

The Witcher 4 is all the rage now, thanks to the trailer we got to see at The Game Awards – and let me tell you, the hype is real.

Having Ciri as the main protagonist begs one question, though. At the end of the previous game, she was basically an almighty goddess – how are the devs handling that? Because, let's be honest here, starting a new game with every ability in the book and as one of the most powerful beings in the world does sound fun, but a little bit unrewarding.

Ciri gets nerfed in The Witcher 4

As the devs behind The Witcher 4 have been sharing a few details about the upcoming game – such as Ciri's romantic endeavours and one special little mini-game making a return – they've also talked a little bit about Ciri's god-like powers from the end of The Witcher 3.

In an interview with GamesRadar, executive producer Małgorzata Mitręga said:

The gap between her being totally overpowered at the end of the previous game and now, with the skill set we showed off in the trailer… something totally happened in between. We had to delve deep to consider how we would address this – we have huge respect for the lore, for both the books and for what made it into our previous games.

Sounds good so far, doesn't it? Lore accuracy has paid off for the Witcher games so far. That wasn't all, though:

But this [how to handle her powers] was one of the first questions we found the answer for, and it's how we were able to create this original story which starts with The Witcher 4.

That "something totally happened" in the time between Witcher 3 and 4 might mean that Ciri went through something that robbed her of some of her powers – speculations are endless right now.

But speaking of Ciri's powers in The Witcher 3 – the game had multiple endings, and some of them see Ciri taking a wildly different path than the one shown in the new cinematic trailer. So, do we actually have a canon ending now?

The Witcher 3 endings – Which one is canon?

They didn't yet officially answer the question which ending of The Witcher 3 is canon, taking a look at Ciri's eyes might give us a clue, though: those cat-like eyes seem quite like Geralt's, don't they? These are Witcher's eyes, so the ending where Ciri follows in Geralt's footsteps might just be the ending that's canon as soon as The Witcher 4 releases.

When that will be isn't sure just yet. While the newly released cinematic trailer got the gaming community hyped again, this doesn't mean that the release is imminent: quite the contrary. It could (and probably will) still take years until we get to play a new Witcher adventure, considering it took seven years from the Cyberpunk release trailer to the actual game as well – CD Projekt Red likes to take their time. But they know what they're doing, so the wait will be worthwhile!
