Sledgehammer Games already seems to be working on a "premium" Call of Duty release for 2023. According to insiders, this is supposed to be a large paid DLC for Modern Warfare 2.

Modern Warfare 2 is the most successful CoD release of all time and millions of players worldwide are playing right now. The camo grind is in full swing and thanks to Campaign Early Access, we've all played through the campaign anyway, haven't we?

Anyone who has played through the campaign probably also knows that the story does not end here. A sequel is obviously planned. And as we know thanks to insiders, a new campaign and other content will be delivered as paid DLC in 2023.

Paid Campaign & Multiplayer DLC for Modern Warfare 2

Activision no longer wants to publish a completely new Call of Duty title every year. Instead, Modern Warfare 2 is said to be the first game in the series to receive new content over the course of two years.

Activision's recent financial report has mentioned that Sledgehammer Games and other supporting studios will be working on a new premium release for 2023. Of course, this raises the question of whether a new CoD title will appear after all, but this has been directly denied by numerous leakers and even the well-known journalist Jason Schreier.

According to them, the "premium" release will be a paid DLC that will continue the campaign and deliver new multiplayer content. The word "premium" in Activision's report in this case simply means that the new content will not be available for free, but will probably be offered at full price.

The New Call of Duty "Tick Tock" Cycle

According to leakers TheGhostOfHope and RalphsValve, Call of Duty will follow a so-called "Tick Tock" cycle in the future. According to them the future of CoD looks like this:

  • Tick (Year 1): New premium title, extensive engine updates, construction of a new storyline.
  • Tock (Year 2): Paid DLC, continuation of the storyline, preparation for the next tick.

In the case of Modern Warfare 2, we would have gotten the first tick in October. We have the new game, complete with major technical updates and a cool story. The DLC will follow in 2023, which will continue the story, among other things, but will also smooth the transition to the next CoD in 2024.

According to initial speculation, the MW2 DLC will include a continuation of the campaign as well as new multiplayer maps and also new content for DMZ and Warzone 2.0.

What do you think of the new 2-year cycle for Call of Duty? Would you pay full price for a DLC and if so, what would that DLC have to offer you?
