You're going to have to say goodbye to Tom Hardy, because he ain't going to be in the follow up to Mad Max: Fury Road, Furiosa. You already knew that, though, because it has kind-of been public knowledge for quite a long time now. That being said, though, boy-oh-boy have they taken a long time to truly get to work on the next Mad Max.

Excitingly, though, Chris Hemsworth has taken to Twitter to reveal that filming has officially started on Mad Max: Furiosa, a prequel to 2015's Fury Road. In the Tweet, in which Chris Hemsworth says "A new journey in the Mad Max saga begins #Furiosa", a clapperboard featuring the film's name is seen in a desert.

Mad Max: Furiosa will follow the titular character, Imperator Furiosa, who will be played by Anya Taylor-Joy in this latest film, despite the role formerly being filled by Charlize Theron. Meanwhile, Hemsworth is due to take the stage as the film's main villain.

When is the Mad Max: Furiosa Release Date?

This movie has been in development for the better part of a decade at this point, with Mad Max: Furiosa set to be released on May 24, 2024. The current release date follows a delay of more than a year, after it was originally set for a 2023 release. These delays have likely been caused by the Covid-19 Pandemic.

Chris Hemsworth's position in the film as the main villain has also sparked a lot of conversation in the community. This is due to the fact that Hemsworth has traditionally played honourable and charming action heroes, generally a film's protagonist rather than antagonist.

In addition, Anya Taylor-Joy has reportedly been chosen for the role of Imperator Furiosa due to her performance in Edgar Wright's Last Night in Soho. The statement was made in an interview with Empire wherein Furiosa's director, George Miller, said the following:

I remember thinking, ‘Gee, she’s interesting.’ I started to say to you, ‘I’m looking for someone to cast as Furiosa,’ and I barely got the sentence out before you said, ‘Don’t go any further, she’s great, she’s gonna be huge. She’s fantastic to work with.’ You were so emphatic about it.

Now, yes, you may have noticed how weird that quote sounds. There's a reason for it. Miller and Edgar Wright were talking to each other in the interview. It's great, you should check it out. Anyway, Mad Max: Furiosa is finally in forking production. It's about time.
