Big-budget polish can cover a lot of problems, but only for so long. In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, the shooting had weight, the presentation was slick, and the production values were exactly what people expect from a series this expensive, yet the rest of the package kept getting in its own way. The interface became a running joke, progression decisions split the community, and the multiplayer often felt oddly clumsy outside the moment-to-moment gunfights. Going further into sci-fi should have opened the door to something wilder than what the series had done before. Instead, Call of Duty: Black Ops III became one of those entries people remember in separate pieces rather than as a complete experience. Multiplayer had speed, mobility, and enough energy to keep matches engaging, while Zombies built a loyal following that still gives the game some real affection. The campaign was the problem, drifting into such a tangled and impersonal story that it often felt like homework dressed up as spectacle. The campaign had ambition, the setting gave Infinity Ward room to try ideas the series usually avoids, and there were stretches where it felt like the studio genuinely wanted to push the formula somewhere new. The campaign absorbed a lot of the criticism, but the larger issue was the broader feeling that the franchise was starting to confuse scale with freshness.
