Just yesterday, Ubisoft's new free-to-play arena shooter XDefiant was announced. The shooter has a kind of class system based on factions from previous Tom Clancy titles. Here's a closer look at all the factions in XDefiant.
Tom Clancy's XDefiant is a brightly colored arena shooter that appeared out of nowhere. In contrast to tactical games that fans would usually associate with the Tom Clancy brand, such as Rainbow Six or Splinter Cell, XDefiant seems to be intended for (filthy) casuals. The first gameplay trailer honestly looked closer to Overwatch than a normal Clancy grave.
The game will focus on intense, action-packed 6v6 matches in familiar modes such as Domination or Team Deathmatch, but it's all structured in a kind of faction/class system. Today we're going to take a closer look at all the factions in XDefiant.
All Factions in XDefiant
- Wolves (from Ghost Recon)
- Echelon (from Splinter Cell)
- Outcasts (from The Division)
- Cleaners (from The Division)
Each faction represents a specific class with special passive and active skills. The characteristics of each faction are as follows:
- Wolves: The Tank class has more health than other classes and shield-based abilities.
- Echelon: The support class can use their skills to uncover enemies for the team.
- Outcasts: The healer class does just that, heal.
- Cleaners: The Assault class does the most damage and has fire-based abilities.
How Do Defiants & Classes Work In XDefiant?
Each player can choose a so-called Defiant. When you choose a Faction, you can equip your Defiant with your own primary and secondary weapons, as well as with skills, utilities, attachments, and gadgets from the faction. This loadout can be adjusted before each respawn, even in the middle of the match, in order to adapt to the opposing team.
The developers have already announced that these are the "first" factions and Defiants in XDefiant, and that new Defiants will definitely be added. Maybe even completely new factions, who knows!

Factions And Their Skills In XDefiant?
It's easy to see what Ubisoft devs were imagining with this - a shooter with a little more character. But for those of you who saw what looked like hero mechanics and are in a blind panic, don't worry. The developers have already announced that XDefiant will first and foremost be a shooter and the skills will only serve to support or to gain an advantage.
If you're still worried that guns might get second place to skills, then allow us to reassure you further. Ubisoft has an ace up their sleeve. TheXclusiveAce, a YouTuber who is known for his detailed analysis of weapons in Call of Duty, was called in by the developers as a consultant :
If TheXclusiveAce has advised the devs on the weapons, we can hope for good weapon balance at least.
The game certainly came out of nowhere, and while naysayers have been quick to accuse it of being a soulless cash grab and an insult to the memory of Tom Clancy, I'll remain above the fray - that's for you, the reader, to decide.
