Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is the much-anticipated sequel to the highly successful Jedi: Fallen Order from 2019, Respawn Entertainment's first foray into 3rd person action adventures. After much anticipation, publisher EA finally released first details on the upcoming game. Here's everything we know so far.
In 2019, Respawn Entertainment, known for their first-person shooters Apex Legends and Titanfall, took the gaming world by surprise with the release of Jedi: Fallen Order. The game was a huge success critically and commercially, so of course a sequel was inevitable. And after waiting for a long time, it has been finally announced: Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, not Fallen Order 2, is the name of the sequel, continuing the "Jedi" brand of games after the first outing.
Fallen Order is one of the best Star Wars games and action games in recent years, reminding us pretty much of the feeling we had when we played Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy many years ago. But it still had a lot of untapped potential, different aspects of the game have plenty of room for improvement. Here's where the sequel could come in and sweep away fans. What do we know about the game though? EA has revealed first details for the highly anticipated game, including a release window for 2023 and details about the story of Jedi: Survivor. We might already know a bit more about the release date actually, as we just got some interesting hints for the concrete date.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Release Date
The release date of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor has so far only been set for 2023, nothing more concrete has been revealed yet. That could obviously mean anything, but leakers and insiders have alleged, that we won't have to wait too long for the game to come out. There are three major hints towards a release date for Jedi: Survivor in March 2023. Here is why that month seems like a solid lead:
- Leak at Sony: The game showed up in a PlayStation database entry, which had the March 2023 date in it.
- Releases of related books: A prequel book called Star Wars Battle Scars has been announced with a release date on March 7, 2023. The official artbook for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is set for a release on May 2. Fans have understandably concluded, that the game has to come out around the same time as the books that are related to it.
- Reports by reliable insider: The leaker and reporter Jeff Grubb, who has a great reputation in the industry, stoked the fires by supporting the speculation surrounding the Jedi: Survivor tie-in books. He claimed, that the game will come out in the same month as the novel Battle Scars – which would be in March.
We have to emphasize, that this is still just speculation, even if it sounds reasonable and believable. As long as EA and Respawn don't officially announce the date, nothing will be confirmed and certain. We will update you, as soon as we know about the release date.
How The Story of Cal Kestis And The Jedi Continues
Survivor is set to be a direct sequel to Fallen Order, set five years after the events of the first games. The first "Jedi" game took place five years after "Revenge of the Sith" and was mostly centered around a bunch of characters that were completely new to the Star Wars universe: you play as Cal Kestis, a young Padawan persecuted by a group of Sith trained by Darth Vader. Together with the rebels Cere Junda and Greez Dritus and the cute drone BD-1, Cal follows the path of the former Jedi Master Eno Cordova in order to find the last remaining Jedi in the galaxy. We won't spoil how the events exactly unfold, in case you haven't played it yet.
The sequel will be set multiple years after the events of Fallen Order. Cal and his friends are still being hunted by the empire and are on the run. Many concrete details haven't been revealed yet, EA only published a short description of the game.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor picks up five years after the events of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Cal must stay one step ahead of the Empire’s constant pursuit as he continues to feel the weight of being one of the last remaining Jedi in the galaxy
So far there is only a short teaser trailer for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, which shows off a significantly darker atmosphere compared to the previous game. Considering that this is the first look we got for the game, this is the mood setter for the game and it's a pretty dire one. Let's see if this will be the overall tone of the finished game.
The teaser is just CG and the only thing we got to see from the game so far. Gameplay has not been shown yet, so we don't know how Jedi: Survivor will play. Considering the strong foundations that were laid with Fallen Order, we don't expect that the developers will stray away too far from the core gameplay loop of the first game. But we will have to wait and see.
Will Jedi: Survivor Be Next-Gen Only?
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will release for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, the game will be next-gen exclusive. Last-gen consoles will be left out, which is a shame for those who haven't been able to upgrade yet. We are seeing more and more next-gen only, like Forspoken or Tekken 8. So maybe it is slowly time to upgrade to a next-gen console or PC.
That's all we know about Star Wars Jedi: Survivor so far. As soon as we know more about the game, we will keep you updated.
