Sharks are almost innocent in *Dangerous Animals*. The real threat is Tucker, a cage-diving operator and serial killer who records his victims being fed to them, played by Jai Courtney with the sweaty enthusiasm of a man hosting the world’s worst travel show. Sean Byrne traps surfer Zephyr aboard his boat and lets Hassie Harrison turn every loose object and half-second distraction into a possible escape. Casting real-life married couple Alison Brie and Dave Franco makes the central joke of *Together* land before the body horror even starts: Tim and Millie have spent so long as a unit that separating may no longer be physically possible. Michael Shanks transforms codependency into a wet, cracking biological process after their move to the countryside awakens something underground. The effects are revolting, but the nastier observation is emotional—love can become an excuse to stop existing as two people. Somehow, it is also very funny. | © NEON

13. The Monkey

A toy monkey beats its drum, somebody dies in a manner that would impress Death from *Final Destination*, and Osgood Perkins barely pauses to mourn. Adapted from Stephen King’s short story, *The Monkey* casts Theo James as estranged twins Hal and Bill, both poisoned by childhood encounters with the cursed toy. Its deaths are absurdly elaborate, but the splatter conceals a bleak joke about mortality: death is random, grief is inherited, and trying to control either only wastes the time left. It is nasty, ridiculous and far more thoughtful than its exploding bodies suggest. | © NEON

After 14 years away, *Final Destination: Bloodlines* does not reinvent Death; it builds Death a much better mousetrap. College student Stefani discovers that her grandmother once prevented a tower disaster, accidentally creating an entire family whose members were never supposed to exist. The resulting accidents restore the franchise’s glorious rhythm of clue, misdirection and anatomically impossible punchline without simply recycling old kills. The revelation that Iris is a companion robot arrives early enough that *Companion* can concentrate on the uglier surprise: her human boyfriend is far less human than she is. Drew Hancock packages a story about control and domestic abuse inside a glossy cabin thriller, complete with programmable intelligence, aggression settings and one spectacularly inconvenient amount of blood. Sophie Thatcher sells every stage of Iris’s awakening without turning her into a mechanical cliché. Danny Boyle refuses to spend *28 Years Later* merely touring the ruins of his earlier success. Young Spike leaves a fortified tidal island and enters an infected mainland that has evolved into its own savage ecosystem, but Alex Garland’s screenplay gradually redirects the panic toward illness, parenthood and grief. Alfie Williams carries that shift with remarkable confidence, while Ralph Fiennes turns the skeletal Dr. Kelson into the film’s strangest source of compassion. Repetition becomes both the puzzle and the threat, with ordinary details growing suspicious through sheer familiarity. It plays like a workplace nightmare designed by M. C. Rahul Sadasivan turns the wealthy architect’s immaculate home into a percussion instrument of footsteps, rattling doors and distant dance anklets, rarely showing more than Pranav Mohanlal’s increasingly damaged confidence. *Diés Iraé* initially appears to be a familiar haunting, then begins questioning whose ghost has arrived and why. Ryan Coogler builds a Mississippi juke joint, fills it with blues music and dancing, then leaves vampires waiting politely at the door. Michael B. Jordan plays returning twins Smoke and Stack with enough distinction that their shared face quickly becomes irrelevant, while newcomer Miles Caton gives the film its musical soul. *Sinners* moves effortlessly between gangster drama, historical tragedy, romance and blood-soaked siege movie. Cropped frankenstein 2025 — 6. Frankenstein

Guillermo del Toro spent decades dreaming about Mary Shelley’s creature, and his *Frankenstein* treats the monster less as an experiment than an abandoned son. Oscar Isaac makes Victor brilliant, theatrical and catastrophically incapable of love; Jacob Elordi answers him with a performance built from wounded curiosity rather than lumbering menace. The enormous sets and painterly Gothic images could have swallowed the story, yet its most painful moments remain intimate. 5. Good Boy

Indy cannot ask why his sick owner has brought him to an isolated family home, so *Good Boy* forces the audience to interpret the danger alongside him. Ben Leonberg films the haunted-house story from the eye level of his own Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, transforming dark stairways, covered doorways and unfamiliar smells into evidence the humans keep ignoring. The perspective is more than an adorable gimmick: Indy understands fear and loyalty but not illness or death. Cinderella has enjoyed centuries of good publicity, so *The Ugly Stepsister* hands the story to Elvira, the supposedly undesirable girl expected to mutilate herself for a prince’s attention. Emilie Blichfeldt stages her transformation through swallowed tapeworms, sewn-on eyelashes and gruesome cosmetic procedures, all photographed with the sugary elegance of an expensive costume drama. The film is frequently hilarious until it suddenly is not. Count Orlok enters *Nosferatu* less like a seductive aristocrat than a plague unearthed from wet soil. Bill Skarsgård’s rasping voice, decaying bulk and gloriously severe mustache strip the vampire of polished romanticism, while Lily-Rose Depp makes Ellen’s desire, shame and supernatural sensitivity the center of Robert Eggers’s retelling. Every doorway appears to conceal a shadow already moving toward its victim. Zach Cregger lets that image infect an entire town, dividing *Weapons* among a distrusted teacher, an angry father, a compromised police officer and several people making impressively terrible decisions. The mystery is genuinely disturbing, yet the film keeps uncovering pockets of deranged comedy. Danny and Michael Philippou make *Bring Her Back* punishingly physical, but the brutality is not empty provocation.
