The dark and depressive world of a video game can really drag you down. But with the right companion, every game can be your happy place. Or it can get even worse.

Welcome to our gallery of the best RPG companions of all time! It's impossible to be truly objective, but this light-hearted opinion piece celebrates our favorite companions of all time. Explore the list and share your own favorites in the comments!
At first, he's simply the "cool guy" of the Mario RPG, but over time you realize he's actually quite a mysterious character in a game where most others are merely familiar and cute. Having that extra dimension makes him an important and interesting companion, in a game that can otherwise feel too light and superficial. | © Nintendo
Normally, he is just silly and clumsy, but in the Kingdom Hearts series, he is so much deeper and more loveable. In many moments, he's the intelligent one, who can empathize with the protagonist and provide a few wise words to say. Not always, of course, but it happens enough for us to fall in love with Goofy as a companion. | © Square Enix
Kreia shows us how a Jedi Master becomes a Sith, but in such a way as to evoke sympathy, and that's a powerful thing. It makes us feel for her, even when she doesn't seem to reciprocate the feelings, and for that we regard her very highly as an original type of companion. | © BioWare
Eunie has the perfect combination of confidence and meme-worthiness. As well as being well written, she is also great in combat. A great all-rounder, and hard not to fall in love with. | © Monolith Soft
Excellently voice-acted, this is the companion that is both killing us and keeping us alive. It's a unique, bizarre relationship, but throughout the course of the game it's a relationship you'll come to value immensely. | © CD Projekt RED
The dark witch from the forest, whose only goal is to survive, can deal out some pretty heavy blows. But when you befriend her you realize there's so much more to Morrigan, and she soon becomes a beloved companion. | © BioWare
Even if they don't talk to us, we keep them on our team until the final battle - every game. Why is that? We don't know either, but the magic is there. | © Game Freak
Our only friend in an empty world. Even though we can't talk to Aggro (because he's a horse), his presence becomes immensely important to fight off the loneliness. A good boy, to be sure. | © Team ICO
The king of Figaro and at the same time the most macho man in the Final Fantasy universe. But over time, the façade crumbles, and you realize that behind it lies a vulnerable and kind companion. You'll end up feeling protective over Figaro, and that's a great motivator to keep fighting. | © Square Enix
Garrus didn't make it into all three Mass Effect games for nothing (Andromeda doesn't count). There are very few characters who are both this determined and this sensible. Even if he is prepared to sacrifice himself for his plans, he always has his heart in the right place and is the voice of reason in this dark universe. | © BioWare
It's not a frog. It's THE frog. A paladin always trying to live up to his heroic code. We see him suffer, but he always gets back up and keeps fighting. A perfect example of a heroic character, and we couldn't ask for more from them. | © Square Enix
A Synth with the personality and memories of a legendary detective from the old world not only sounds like a cool backstory, but also makes for one of the best companions. If there is any criticism here, it's that his story is so exciting, you end up feeling like you're his companion and not the other way around. | © Bethesda
Makoto may look like a typical grade-A student, but she also has heavy baggage to carry, and despite it all, she still does an insane amount for us. She acts as a double agent, spies on her own sister, goes to prison with us, and more. You can't ask for a more-committed companion. | © Atlus
In the dark world of D&D, it's sometimes good to have light-hearted characters with a can-do spirit, and that's what Karlack is. Sure, she has a tragic backstory and a daunting future, but she rarely lets it get her down. And when you romance Karlach? Prepare to be left either weeping, or willing to sacrifice it all for her. | © Larian Studios
