15 Great Video Games Abandoned Too Soon

1-15

Left behind before their time.

Friday the 13th The Game

15. Friday the 13th: The Game (2017)

Friday the 13th: The Game turned camp counselors and Jason Voorhees into an asymmetrical horror party that felt genuinely tense. Seven survivors had to hide, repair cars, or find Tommy Jarvis while one player stalked them with slow, unstoppable menace. A legal battle between the film's creators tanked everything, freezing new content and eventually shutting down the studio. Jason never got the DLC villains or new maps that fans had been promised, and the servers just kept limping along until they didn't. | © Gun Media

Hyper Scape

14. Hyper Scape (2020)

Hyper Scape attempted to address battle royale fatigue through rapid movement, smaller arena maps, and short match lengths. Matches featured vertical traversal and shrinking urban districts, alongside built-in Twitch integration that allowed livestream viewers to influence active match events. Under two years after launch, Ubisoft shut down the servers after failing to retain a stable player base. | © Ubisoft

Rumbleverse

13. Rumbleverse (2022)

Rumbleverse dropped players into a battle royale where the only weapons were fists, elbows, and the occasional folding chair. Instead of guns and loot, Iron Galaxy built a game around wrestling moves, letting you suplex strangers off rooftops in a shrinking arena. The brawling felt fresh in a genre drowning in shooters, and climbing buildings to escape a pile driver never got old. Less than a year after launch, the servers went dark and the fighting stopped for good. | © Epic Games

The Cycle Frontier

12. The Cycle: Frontier (2022)

The Cycle: Frontier deployed players onto a hostile alien planet where every supply run combined environmental hazards with direct player confrontation. That extraction formula ensured resource collection remained hazardous throughout each drop. The atmosphere on Fortuna III heightened the danger through localized weather events and native wildlife swarms that could eliminate a squad as quickly as an enemy team. Yager Development shut down the game in 2023. | © Yager Development

Wild Star

11. WildStar (2014)

WildStar rolled into the MMO space with a Saturday morning cartoon look and combat that actually demanded you dodge telegraphed attacks like an action game. Carbine Studios built raids so brutally difficult they became legendary among the small crowd tough enough to clear them. The problem was that difficulty scared off casual players before the game ever found its footing. By 2018 the servers went dark, leaving behind one of the most mechanically ambitious MMOs nobody stuck around to finish. | © NCsoft

Evolve

10. Evolve (2015)

Evolve turned monster hunting into a genuine mind game, pitting four hunters against one player controlling a growing beast. The asymmetry actually worked, with the monster feeling terrifying instead of gimmicky once it hit full size. Then day-one DLC and a wall of paid content buried the goodwill before word of mouth could build. Population cratered within months, and what started as a clever pitch turned into a case study on how not to launch a multiplayer game. | © 2K Games

Battleborn 2016

9. Battleborn (2016)

Battleborn had the misfortune of launching two weeks before Overwatch and never recovered from that timing. Gearbox built a genuinely weird roster of 25 heroes, mixing a sentient jellyfish, a robot knight, and a floating brain in a jar into one game. Underneath the chaos was a smart mix of MOBA progression and shooter combat that few games have replicated since. It deserved a fair fight, but it got buried before players even noticed what it was doing. | © 2K

Law Breakers

8. LawBreakers (2017)

LawBreakers threw out gravity as a fixed rule and let players fight in zones where up and down stopped meaning anything. Cliff Bleszinski built it as a return to hardcore arena shooters, full of tight movement and roles that actually mattered in a fight. The problem was timing, since it launched right as Overwatch had already claimed that audience. Boss Key Productions shut down a year later, and a genuinely clever shooter got buried before people even finished learning its maps. | © Nexon

Spellbreak

7. Spellbreak (2020)

Spellbreak replaced traditional shooter combat with elemental magic combinations, allowing players to pair fireballs, ice spikes, poison clouds, and lightning attacks in real-time combat. The absence of firearms set it apart from contemporary battle royale titles. Proletariat shut down the servers in 2022 following the studio's acquisition by Blizzard Entertainment. | © Proletariat

Knockout City

6. Knockout City (2021)

Knockout City turned dodgeball into a full-on competitive shooter substitute, and it worked way better than it had any right to. Teams lobbed, dodged, and even turned themselves into balls to get thrown across the map, which sounds silly until you're pulling off a diving catch to save a teammate. Velan Studios kept adding new balls and modes, but the free-to-play switch came too late to fix the population problem. The servers went dark in 2023, closing the book on one of the more inventive multiplayer ideas of its era. | © Electronic Arts

Gigantic

5. Gigantic (2017)

Gigantic paired hero shooter combat with giant guardian creatures that acted like living objectives, which made every match feel like a boss fight wrapped around a team fight. The art style leaned into painted fantasy visuals instead of the usual gritty sci-fi look, and it actually stood out because of that. Motiga built something with real personality, but publisher issues and shifting ownership under Perfect World left the game stuck in limbo before it could grow an audience. It shut down in 2018, barely a year after launch, still looking better than most of its competition. | © Perfect World Entertainment

Paragon

4. Paragon (2016)

Paragon put Epic Games' full production muscle behind a third person MOBA, and the character models alone looked like something out of a tech demo. Movement mattered more than in most games in the genre, with dodges and card based builds replacing the usual item shop grind. Epic pulled the plug in 2018 after struggling to find a stable audience, then did something almost unheard of and refunded every player who had ever spent money on it. The assets lived on in Unreal Engine's marketplace, which somehow feels like a stranger legacy than the game itself. | © Epic Games

Marvels Avengers

3. Marvel's Avengers (2020)

Marvel's Avengers actually nailed the hard part first, giving players a campaign about Kamala Khan that treated her like the emotional center of the whole story. The combat felt good, the Golden Path collectibles scratched a real itch, and then the live-service endgame showed up and had almost nothing to offer. Gear grinding replaced character writing, content updates crawled out one hero at a time, and the momentum from launch month evaporated fast. By the time War Table repeatedly promised improvements that never landed the way fans needed, the servers were already emptying out. | © Square Enix

Heroes of the Storm

2. Heroes of the Storm (2015)

Heroes of the Storm took Blizzard's entire universe and threw it into one big brawler, letting Diablo demons fight next to Starcraft marines without blinking. The map variety alone set it apart, since every battleground changed the objectives and forced totally different strategies. Then 2018 happened, Blizzard cut the esports scene and gutted the dev team, and momentum just drained out of the game overnight. It still runs today, but everyone remembers the moment support basically stopped. | © Blizzard Entertainment

Anthem

1. Anthem (2019)

Anthem let you strap into a Javelin exosuit and fly through canyons like nothing else on the market. BioWare nailed the flight mechanics before it nailed almost anything else, and combat in the air felt genuinely new. Loot was thin, the story went nowhere, and the endgame gave players no reason to log back in. EA killed the promised overhaul, Anthem NEXT, in 2021, leaving a game with real bones and no body to stand on. | © EA

Some games launch with real promise, a passionate community, and genuine potential, only for the developers to pull support and walk away far too early. Whether it was low sales, studio troubles, or shifting priorities, these titles deserved a longer life. Here are 15 great video games abandoned too soon.
