15 Video Games That Took Years to Finally Find Their Audience

1-15

Slow burn success.

Kingdoms Of Amalur Reckoning

15. Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning (2012)

Curt Schilling put a chunk of his baseball fortune into Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, and the studio behind it collapsed within a year of release. That backstory overshadowed the game for a long time, which is a shame because the combat alone deserved better attention. Chaining together sword swings, chakram throws, and spell bursts felt closer to a character action game than a typical western RPG. Years later, a re-release let people finally judge it on its own terms instead of its studio's implosion. | © THQ
Sleeping Dogs

14. Sleeping Dogs (2012)

Hong Kong never got the open world treatment quite like this before Sleeping Dogs showed up. You play an undercover cop sinking so deep into the Triads that the missions built for infiltration start feeling like a personality change. Punches land with actual weight, car chases weave through wet neon streets, and the karaoke minigame has no business being as fun as it is. It got buried under bigger releases in 2012, then slowly built the following it always deserved. | © Square Enix
Dead Cells

13. Dead Cells (2018)

Dying over and over usually gets old fast, but Dead Cells turns every death into a reason to try again. The castle rearranges itself each run, so memorizing a path never replaces actually getting better at the game. Its animation work sells every hit, every dodge roll, every scramble away from a room that went wrong. What started as an early access experiment turned into one of the tightest action games anyone's built in years. | © Motion Twin / Playdigious
Cropped earthbound

12. EarthBound (1994)

A kid with a baseball bat fights an alien invasion armed mostly with sarcasm and a backpack full of cheeseburgers. That's EarthBound, a game that looked like a joke on store shelves and turned out to have real teeth underneath the jokes. The scratch-and-sniff card that came with it became more famous than the game itself for a while, which tells you how little anyone understood what they were holding. It took years, fan translations, and a lot of internet word of mouth before people caught up to what Nintendo had actually made. | © Nintendo
Dwarf Fortress

11. Dwarf Fortress (2006)

Nobody starts playing Dwarf Fortress expecting to understand it right away. The interface looks like a spreadsheet had a nervous breakdown, and the learning curve has become its own kind of legend. But underneath all that text and those ASCII symbols sits a world simulator so detailed that entire dwarf civilizations rise and collapse from causes you never even witnessed. A cleaner-looking Steam release finally gave newcomers a way in, decades after the diehards had already fallen for it completely. | © Kitfox Games
Nier Automata

10. NieR: Automata (2017)

2B's dress was designed to hide a camera angle joke, which tells you everything about how weird this game gets. NieR: Automata makes you finish it three times, each pass recontextualizing what you thought the story was about. Somewhere around the second ending, the credits turn into a shoot-em-up that lets you help other players who rage quit before you. Square Enix buried something genuinely strange inside an action game, and word of mouth did the rest. | © Square Enix
Vampire Survivors

9. Vampire Survivors (2022)

Thirty minutes into a run of Vampire Survivors, the screen fills with so many effects you can barely find your own character anymore. There's no combat button, no skill tree to obsess over, just movement and the slow avalanche of upgrades stacking on top of each other. It sold for a few dollars and looked like a joke next to its own screenshots. Instead it turned into the thing everyone was quietly playing on a second monitor at work. | © poncle
Cyberpunk 2077

8. Cyberpunk 2077 (2020)

Night City looked like the future in 2020, then immediately became a punchline for crashes and missing features. Cyberpunk 2077 spent its launch buried under refund requests and console bans. CD Projekt Red kept patching, added an entire expansion, and let a Netflix anime spin-off remind people why they cared in the first place. What launched as a cautionary tale became one of the better redemption arcs gaming has seen. | © CD Projekt
Terraria

7. Terraria (2011)

Two-dimensional and pixelated, Terraria looked like a cheap Minecraft clone the year it came out. Digging straight down got you killed by something in the dark, and that risk turned out to be the whole appeal. Underneath the retro sprites sat boss fights, biomes, and crafting trees deep enough to swallow hundreds of hours. It kept getting content updates for over a decade, and each one pulled another wave of players back in. | © 505 Games
Fallout New Vegas

6. Fallout: New Vegas (2010)

Obsidian built Fallout: New Vegas in about eighteen months, and the bugs at launch made that painfully obvious. Reviewers dinged it for crashes while barely mentioning how much the writing outclassed everything around it. Every faction in the Mojave had a real argument for why they deserved to run it, including the ones that were clearly terrible. Time smoothed out the technical mess and left behind one of the most quoted role-playing games anyone's made. | © Bethesda Softworks
Spec Ops The Line

5. Spec Ops: The Line (2012)

Six hundred thousand copies sold at launch, and most players still assumed it was just another military shooter. Spec Ops: The Line uses white phosphorus and a screaming radio voice to turn that assumption against you. By the time Walker starts hallucinating his own guilt, the game has already made you complicit in something you can't take back. Publishers 2K let it flop quietly, and only later did people start calling it the war shooter that actually meant it. | © 2K Games
The Forest

4. The Forest (2014)

Somewhere between building a log cabin and getting your arm torn off by a mutant, The Forest figured out how to make survival horror feel personal. Early access players spent two years watching it grow from a rough crafting demo into something that actually understood dread. Sophie the cannibal camp, the caves you didn't want to go back into, the radio tower quest nobody explains properly. Endnight Games let word of mouth do the heavy lifting, and by the time it left early access, the fanbase had already built its own mythology around it. | © Endnight Games
Minecraft

3. Minecraft (2011)

A block game with no story, no tutorial worth mentioning, and graphics that looked outdated the day it launched. Minecraft didn't sell itself through marketing, it sold itself through kids showing other kids their houses. Redstone contraptions, accidental creeper explosions, entire servers built around rules nobody official ever wrote down. Notch made something so open-ended that an entire generation just moved in and started decorating. | © Mojang
Stardew Valley

2. Stardew Valley (2016)

One guy, ConcernedApe, spent four years alone making a farming game that looked like it belonged on a SNES cartridge. Stardew Valley didn't need flashy combat or a marketing budget, it needed players to remember what it felt like to water crops before school. The relationships you build with Leah or Shane sneak up on you slower than any dating sim expects. What looked like a niche throwback became the game people quietly put hundreds of hours into without ever meaning to. | © Chucklefish
Among Us

1. Among Us (2018)

Released in 2018 to almost total silence, Among Us sat untouched for two years before anyone noticed it existed. Then a stream, then a meme, then suddenly everyone's group chat was arguing about who vented from electrical. The genius was never the graphics or the map design, it was watching a friend lie to your face in real time. A game nobody bought at launch ended up defining what online socializing looked like during lockdown. | © InnerSloth
