15 Video Games With Stories That Rival the Best Movies

1-15

Play it like a film.

A Plague Tale Requiem

15. A Plague Tale: Requiem (2022)

Amicia spends all of A Plague Tale: Requiem trying to save her brother Hugo from a curse made of rats. Asobo Studio gives her a choice near the end that no walkthrough can make painless. Players who finish it tend to go quiet for a minute before they look anything up. The rat count in some scenes reportedly passed five thousand on screen at once, which is almost beside the point by then. | © Focus Entertainment
Spec Ops The Line

14. Spec Ops: The Line (2012)

Captain Walker tells himself he is rescuing survivors in Dubai, and for a while the game lets him believe it. Yager Development built Spec Ops: The Line around a white phosphorus scene that mirrors a real weapon still used by modern militaries. The loading screens start asking "Do you feel like a hero yet?" somewhere around chapter nine. Nobody walks away from that ending agreeing on how much of it was Walker's fault. | © 2K Games
Final Fantasy VII

13. Final Fantasy VII (1997)

Aerith's death in Final Fantasy VII happens in a 1997 PlayStation game and people are still not over it. Square built the entire back third of the story around Cloud's fractured memory of who he actually is. Sephiroth remains one of the only villains whose motive requires a flashback inside a flashback to explain. Twenty five years later the remake trilogy changed the ending and reopened every argument it had supposedly settled. | © Square Enix
Disco Elysium

12. Disco Elysium (2019)

A detective wakes up with no memory, no name, and a tie hanging from a ceiling fan above him. ZA/UM wrote Disco Elysium with no combat system at all, just dialogue checks tied to 24 skills arguing in his head. Harry's politics, his past, even his face get built entirely from what the player chooses to believe about him. The murder he is investigating almost becomes secondary to the question of who he was before he forgot. | © ZA/UM
Cyberpunk 2077

11. Cyberpunk 2077 (2020)

V gets six months to live and spends all of Cyberpunk 2077 trying to outrun that number. CD Projekt Red wrote multiple endings, and the one most players consider "correct" involves giving up the body entirely. Johnny Silverhand, voiced by Keanu Reeves, spends the whole game arguing that identity was never really V's to keep. The 2020 launch nearly buried the story under its own bugs, which makes the fact that people still debate the ending kind of remarkable. | © CD Projekt
Cropped Heavy Rain

10. Heavy Rain (2010)

Four playable characters in Heavy Rain can die before the credits roll, and the story keeps moving without them. David Cage built the whole game around the Origami Killer case, letting Ethan Mason lose fingers and sanity chasing his son. The famous QTE sequences made some players feel tension and others feel like they were just pressing buttons on command. Quantic Dream shipped seventeen possible endings, which is either ambition or a studio hedging its bets. | © Sony Computer Entertainment
Ghost of Tsushima

9. Ghost of Tsushima (2020)

Jin Sakai kills an unarmed man from behind in the opening hours of Ghost of Tsushima, and the game never lets him forget it. Sucker Punch set the story during the actual 1274 Mongol invasion of Tsushima Island, then built a samurai who has to abandon his own code to survive it. His uncle Lord Shimura calls him a disgrace for it. Nobody in the story, including Jin, seems fully convinced he made the right call. | © Sony Interactive Entertainment
Life Is Strange

8. Life Is Strange (2015)

Max Caulfield can rewind time, and Life Is Strange spends five episodes punishing her for it. Dontnod Entertainment set the story in Arcadia Bay, Oregon, where saving one person quietly dooms another down the line. The finale forces a choice between a town and a best friend named Chloe Price. Square Enix published it in 2015, and players still fight over which ending was ever meant to feel like a win. | © Square Enix
The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt

7. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2015)

A sword, a medallion, and a daughter who isn't really his daughter drive the entire plot of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. CD Projekt Red adapted Andrzej Sapkowski's novels, where Geralt of Rivia spends the whole game hunting Ciri across a war-torn continent. The 2015 release let players shape her fate through choices scattered dozens of hours apart. Her ending depends on decisions most people don't even remember making. | © Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment
Cropped Bio Shock Infinite

6. BioShock Infinite (2013)

Elizabeth tears a hole into another reality within the first hour of BioShock Infinite, and the plot never lets that tear close. Irrational Games set the 1912 floating city of Columbia against a hidden daughter, a drowned baptism, and a father named Booker DeWitt who isn't who he thinks he is. Ken Levine has said the ending was designed to make players rethink everything before it, not just the final cutscene. The multiverse logic still splits rooms of people who finished it on the same night. | © 2K Games
Detroit Become Human

5. Detroit: Become Human (2018)

Three androids in Detroit: Become Human can each die for good before the story ends, and the game barely blinks when it happens. Quantic Dream tracked player choices across a flowchart so dense that no two full playthroughs look alike. David Cage has said the branching was meant to make every decision carry weight. Whether Markus leads a peaceful protest or a violent uprising changes the entire tone of the finale, and people still fight about which path the game actually wants you to take. | © Sony Interactive Entertainment
Cropped Mass Effect 2

4. Mass Effect 2 (2010)

Picture the suicide mission briefing in Mass Effect 2, where you assign your crew to jobs that might get them killed based on loyalty missions you may or may not have finished. BioWare built an entire final act around the idea that preparation equals survival. Miranda or Jacob leading the second squad is not a cosmetic choice, it can decide who comes home. Losing characters permanently in 2010 was rare enough that some players reloaded old saves for hours rather than accept it. | © Electronic Arts
God of War

3. God of War (2018)

Kratos spends most of God of War trying not to become his father, and the game never lets him fully succeed. Santa Monica Studio rebuilt the entire series in 2018 around a single uninterrupted camera shot. Atreus learning the truth about his godhood changes how he treats everyone around him, including Kratos. The ending reveals who Atreus really is in Norse myth, and that reveal recontextualizes every quiet conversation that came before it. | © Sony Interactive Entertainment
The last of us

2. The Last of Us (2013)

Ellie is fourteen years old when Joel decides her immunity does not matter more than her life. Naughty Dog gave players control right up to the massacre at the hospital, then took away the choice entirely. Joel lies to her afterward, and the game ends on her simply asking if it's true. That final cut to black in 2013 split rooms of people who finished it the same week over whether Joel did the right thing. | © Sony Interactive Entertainment
Red Dead Redemption 2

1. Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018)

Arthur Morgan finds out he's dying of tuberculosis partway through Red Dead Redemption 2, and the game lets that diagnosis reshape every choice after it. Rockstar Games built an honor system that quietly tracks small acts of cruelty or kindness across eighty hours. Arthur can die trying to save John's family or die alone with nothing settled, depending on choices some players don't remember making. Released in 2018, it still gets argued over by people who can't agree on whether Arthur actually earns his redemption. | © Rockstar Games
