1-5

Five times Worlds went out with a bang

League of Legends - November 5th 2021, 22:30 GMT+1
TPA 0511 2

5. Taipei Assassins vs Azubu Frost, Worlds Season 2: the ultimate dark horse, TPA went through several favorites to earn their place in the finals, defeating Najin Sword and Moscow5. Azubu Frost, meanwhile, were among the first teams to show how dominant South Korea would become, going through TSM and CLG.EU. Azubu would take the opening game despite falling behind early as they outperformed TPA in teamfights. However, the LMS team followed this with three very strong games, even getting Azubu to surrender in game 3. The Korean team tried their best but it was not enough - and with a 3-1, TPA catapulted their region to fame (© Riot Games).

4. Samsung White vs Star Horn Royal Club, Worlds 2014: In 2014, Samsung White looked dominant in the playoffs. After they finally took down their sister team Samsung Blue in a 3-0 semifinal, the last challenge was Jian "Uzi" Zi-Hao’s Star Horn Royal Club. The series started with a very one-sided win for Samsung. The second game began with a massive brawl, but eventually some impeccable roams by Cho "Mata" Se-hyeong’s Janna tilted the scales in Samsung’s favor. falling in a massive brawl early in the second game. SHR weren’t done, though, and won the third game after some fancy teamfighting from their carries. The LPL team got two early kills in game four, but Samsung caught them going for a tower dive to get the lead and never looked back (© Riot Games).

3. SKT T1 vs KOO Tigers, Worlds 2015: After missing the previous championship, T1 were back with a vengeance in 2015, going undefeated until the finals. There, they met a KOO Tigers squad that was actually edged out by Flash Wolves in the groups - before destroying KT Rolster and Fnatic. KOO were massive underdogs, but that was nothing new to them. SKT breezed through the first game, but the Tigers fought them hard in the next two. T1 turned game two around, but found themselves swept in the third one as KOO finally got the win. However, Faker led T1 to a decisive victory in the next game, securing the win with a standout Ryze performance to make his team the first two-time champion (© Riot Games).

2. Suning Gaming vs DAMWON, Worlds 2020: Few people expected Suning to make it far in the 2020 World championship, coming only third in the LPL. They showed their mettle in a group with G2 Esports and Team Liquid, coming out in first place before defeating JDG and Top Esports, the other two LPL teams. DWG, meanwhile, took first place in groups before taking out DRX and having their revenge on G2 with a 3-1 in the semifinal. Suning had the lead in the first game, but they could not stop DWG's dragon scaling and eventually, the LCK team took over. However, the LPL team gave them a taste of their own medicine with a dragon soul and a masterful pressure game from the top lane. Despite a poor start, Suning were close to making the turnaround in game 3, but DAMWON secured it - and with a very strong game four, took the key win (© Riot Games).

1. SKT T1 vs Samsung Galaxy, Worlds 2016 - SKT were poised to defend their cup, until then the only team to return to Worlds after winning it. Samsung, meanwhile, managed to snag the last LCK seed and coast to the final by defeating two Western teams. SKT were the big favorites, but Samsung had something to say about it.This was a marathon series, starting with an over 50 minutes for game 1 and going all 5 games. SKT opened up with two wins - the first hard-fought, the second almost pedestrian - and when everyone had counted Samsung out after falling back hard in game three, they struck back hard, even stealing the elder dragon to win. T1 managed to prevail in game 5, but they had to work for it (© Riot Games).
