Dave Bautista is officially becoming the Ghost of Sparta.
Dave Bautista has been cast as Kratos in Amazon Prime Video's upcoming God of War series. The former WWE star takes over the role from Ryan Hurst after the actor was forced to leave the production due to an on-set injury.
Hurst was originally announced as Kratos in January 2026, and had already begun filming when he suffered a torn bicep during production. The injury required surgery and would have significantly delayed his return to filming. Rather than push the show's production into 2027, Amazon and Sony opted to recast the role.
Bautista had been rumored to be in talks for the role earlier this month, but his casting has now been confirmed. Because Hurst had already filmed portions of the series, his departure means that scenes featuring the character will need to be reshot with Bautista.
Dave Bautista Is the New Kratos
Bautista is no stranger to physically demanding franchise roles. Best known for his breakout role as Drax in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy films, the actor has also appeared in Dune, Blade Runner 2049, and several other major Hollywood productions.
His physical presence makes him both a natural and obvious choice for Kratos. The character is notoriously muscular and imposing, and Bautista has the physique that allows him to convincingly portray the Spartan warrior.
Bautista's casting also gives the series an actor with experience balancing action-heavy performances with more dramatic material.
What Is the God of War Series About?
The Amazon series is based primarily on the more recent God of War games. It begins with the 2018 installment that moved the franchise from Greek mythology into the Norse setting.
The story follows Kratos as he attempts to raise his young son, Atreus, following the death of his wife, Faye. The pair embark on a journey to spread her ashes from the highest point in the Nine Realms. As they do so, they encounter gods, monsters, and the consequences of Kratos' violent past along the way.
Callum Vinson remains on board to play Atreus, while the cast also includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor.
Prime Video has ordered two seasons of God of War, with the seasons planned to shoot back-to-back. Production originally began in Vancouver in February this year, and is set to continue in the coming weeks with Bautista now officially aboard.
The series does not yet have a confirmed release date.
