The line between the film and gaming industries is becoming increasingly blurred, and Lionsgate now wants to actively capitalize on this trend. Following the success of major video game adaptations based on well-known movie universes, the studio has confirmed that two of its most iconic brands are set to receive high-quality AAA video game adaptations: John Wick and Saw. With this move, Lionsgate joins a growing list of studios expanding their established franchises into the interactive space.

Lionsgate Bets On Big Names And Big Budgets

During a recent earnings call, Adam Fogelson, Chairman of Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group, made it clear that gaming is becoming a strategic priority for the company. According to him, Lionsgate is seeing “increased interest and new opportunities” surrounding major properties like John Wick and Saw, with development progressing as planned. While concrete details are still under wraps, the statements strongly suggest that official announcements may be coming sooner rather than later.

That Lionsgate chose these two franchises comes as little surprise. John Wick has evolved into a modern action icon thanks to its highly stylized fight choreography, clearly defined criminal underworld, and memorable characters. Saw, on the other hand, has been a staple of the horror genre for years, thriving on psychological tension, moral ambiguity, and deadly puzzles. Both universes are well suited for immersive interactive experiences.

When Action Fantasy Meets Psychological Horror

The potential of a AAA John Wick game is especially obvious. Fans have long dreamed of stepping into the shoes of the legendary hitman or at least operating within his universe. A story-driven single-player game featuring intense gunfights, close-quarters combat, and an open structure seems like a natural fit. Locations such as the Continental Hotel could serve as a central hub for missions, upgrades, and character interactions. Alternatively, Lionsgate could introduce entirely new playable characters striving to make a name for themselves under the strict rules of the assassin world.

Saw, by contrast, is likely to take a very different approach. Instead of fast-paced action, the focus would likely be on a dark, oppressive horror experience built around atmosphere, player choice, and psychological pressure. Puzzles, moral dilemmas, and a constant sense of helplessness could take center stage perfectly in line with the film series. Such a game could stand out significantly from more traditional horror titles.

At this point, neither development studios nor target platforms have been revealed, and there is no release window in sight. What is clear, however, is that Lionsgate is serious about entering the AAA gaming market. If the games live up to expectations, John Wick and Saw could not only extend their successful film franchises but also set new standards for movie-to-game adaptations. Fans will be watching closely to see just how deadly or stylish this next step will be.
