After years of waiting, CD Projekt Red has finally given fans a clearer idea of when they can expect The Witcher 4.
CD Projekt Red has confirmed that The Witcher 4 is targeting a 2028 release window, although an exact launch date has not yet been announced.
CD Projekt Red joint CEO Michał Nowakowski shared this important update in a video message ahead of Gamescom. "We're not ready to share an exact date," Nowakowski said, before confirming the game's release date. He also acknowledged that the wait may be frustrating for fans but asked them to give the development team more time.

As we near #gamescom in just a few days, CD PROJEKT RED Joint-CEO Michal Nowakowski would like to personally invite YOU to join us there, and hear about the future of The Witcher franchise! pic.twitter.com/Jyam30SrQH
The announcement for the highly anticipated sequel comes ahead of Gamescom 2026, where fans had hoped to see more of the upcoming RPG. However, CD Projekt Red has confirmed that The Witcher 4 itself will not be shown at the event.
Ciri Takes Center Stage in The Witcher 4
Unlike the previous mainline games, whose protagonist is Geralt of Rivia, The Witcher 4 will put Ciri at the center of the story. Otherwise known as Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon, she is a powerful Witcher-in-training and the heir to a royal bloodline, whose destiny is deeply intertwined with Geralt.
CD Projekt Red describes the game as the beginning of a brand-new Witcher saga with Ciri as the protagonist. It features "a huge and immersive open world, intense and action-packed gameplay, and a deep, impactful story", Nowakowski added.
The game was first revealed at The Game Awards in December 2024, where CD Projekt Red showed a cinematic trailer featuring Ciri investigating a monster that has terrorized a remote village for generations.
More Than 500 Developers Are Working on the Game
CD Projekt Red appears to be putting significant resources behind the sequel. According to Nowakowski, more than 500 developers are currently working on The Witcher 4. He described it as the company's "biggest, boldest, and most ambitious game to date."
The developer has also confirmed that The Witcher 4 will be a single-player, open-world RPG built using Unreal Engine 5. It is being designed to be the studio's most immersive and ambitious Witcher game yet.
Besides providing an update on the upcoming game, CD Projekt Red confirmed that Songs of the Past, the third and latest expansion for The Witcher 3, is scheduled for 2027.
