For weeks, fans were speculating about which major announcement was connected to the ominous statue in the desert. Now there’s finally clarity. Larian Studios was behind the PR event and used it to announce the studio’s next game. We’ve put together everything we know so far about Divinity.
"The statue in the desert" was a complete mystery for a long time, confusing gamers all over the world. Larian Studios finally freed us from the collective guessing game at the Game Awards: behind it was none other than the studio known for Baldur's Gate 3 – along with the announcement of a brand-new game. Here’s everything you need to know about Divinity.
What You Can Expect From Divinity
The announcement of Larian’s new game was probably one of the most elaborate reveals to date. First came the marketing event with the statue in the desert, followed by a massive appearance at the Game Awards themselves, where actors were seated in the front rows only to be lifted into the air while the game’s first trailer played in the background.
You might already know other games from the franchise, such as Divinity: Original Sin, an RPG set entirely in a world created by Larian itself. The series mainly focuses on themes like religion, gods, and (surprise) divinity. Divinity: Original Sin 2, like Baldur's Gate 3, was a turn-based game.
Without the rules of Dungeons and Dragons, the world felt more alive and interactive. You could interact with almost everything and use just about anything you could imagine in combat against your enemies.
The world of Rivellon still places a strong emphasis on magic, and you’ll find classic fantasy races such as elves, dwarves, and humans, alongside several others. The studio itself describes the upcoming game as even bigger and deeper than all of its predecessors.
The trailer already promises a much darker tone than Baldur’s Gate 3, which is saying a lot. As it appears, Rivellon is threatened by a truly malevolent wave of hellish creatures.

No Sequel to Divinity 2: Original Sin
The game will not be a direct sequel to the existing series. Sven Vincke, director of Larian Studios, confirmed this during the announcement.
This marks the beginning of something new, with more breadth, depth, and intimacy than anything we’ve developed so far. We’ve been working toward this moment ever since we took our fate into our own hands. This is the Divinity we’ve always wanted to create, and you’re going to have loads of fun with it.
After the studio split from Wizards of the Coast and officially left the DnD universe, it definitely sounds like Larian can now develop completely freely.
Even if some of you were hoping for a direct continuation, Divinity likely won’t disappoint any fans of the series – especially when you look at Larian Studios’ previous releases.
Release Date And Possible Platforms
There is still no official release date for Divinity, so we can only speculate based on previous development timelines. Baldur’s Gate 3 took six years to release, while Divinity: Original Sin 2 was developed in three.
If you assume the studio began development a year after Baldur’s Gate, the earliest possible release would be 2026. Given the announced scope of the game, however, it’s more likely that it won’t arrive until after 2028.
As for available platforms, a PC release is pretty much guaranteed. With some luck, you might even get Early Access, just like back in the days of Baldur’s Gate. A PS5 – or maybe even a PS6 by then – also seems very likely.
Larian only recently announced Divinity: Original Sin 2 for the Switch 2 on December 15, so Nintendo fans might not be left out this time either. A release on Xbox is also to be expected.
