Although shooter fans soon got tired of the World War theme, World at War showed once again how well this setting can work. 4. Modern Warfare (2019)

The new Modern Warfare is an excellent game that offers probably the most realistic weapon feeling of the series. The graphics are breathtaking and due to Warzone and probably also the Corona pandemic, MW is the best-sold Call of Duty ever. In our opinion, it does almost everything right, but doesn't bring enough new ideas to make it to the top of our ranking. | © Activision

3. Modern Warfare 2 (2010)

The campaign of Modern Warfare 2 was probably one of the most controversial at the time. The airport mission, where a terrorist group also shoots at civilians, will probably remain in the memory of every gamer. 2. Black Ops (2011)

With Black Ops, another series within the CoD franchise started in 2011 in addition to Modern Warfare. The setting during the Cold War allowed for exciting changes of location from Russia to Vietnam and Cuba. Characters like Mason, Woods, Reznov or Hudson are well known to every shooter fan. Here, the multiplayer laid the foundation for all subsequent Black Ops installments and offered unforgettable maps such as Nuketown. | © Activision

1. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2008)

For the first time, Modern Warfare took the series out of the world war scenario and into the modern fight against terrorism. It was a perfect mix of bombastically staged, movie-like Michael Bay missions and quieter crawl passages with the popular Cpt. Price. The multiplayer also introduced a completely new progression and unlocking system, and introduced the killstreaks that became a staple of the series. Without this game, today's multiplayer shooters would probably look completely different, which is why it is the absolute number 1 for us. | © Activision

Honorable Mention: Vanguard (2021)

The newest part of the franchise is called Vanguard and takes us back to the Second World War. Although the campaign is nothing special and especially the Zombies mode is disappointing, the multiplayer is really good. Maybe it's not one of the best CoDs ever, but it still is up there. | © Activision
