The Batman was fire, and it continues a trend that's both concerning and great for DC: Every movie that exists outside of the DCEU is amazing, and the ones that are meant to drive a bigger narrative all... suck ass. The big bosses are hoping that Black Adam will change that with its soft-reboot. Meanwhile, The Penguin will continue The Batman's greatness in its own HBO Max spinoff series.

The Penguin Opening Scene Revealed

Colin Farrell recently sat down for an interview, and revealed some details on the first episode of The Penguin. Careful: Minor spoilers if you haven't seen The Batman yet.

[The Penguin] starts about a week after the film The Batman ends, so Gotham is still somewhat underwater. I read the first script for the first episode, and it opens up with my feet splashing through the water in Falcone's office. Even just that alone, I read it, I was like, 'Oh, jeez.' [Lauren LeFranc] is writing the whole thing and showrunning, and she's formidable. It's just a very exciting prospect because I love that character and I was greedy with it. I felt like I didn't have enough.

Colin Farrell sounds more excited about this than is the norm, which prompts me to believe this is more than just promo-bla-bla... this is passion. Farrell seems to seriously be in love with the role of the Penguin and the Batman universe that Matt Reeves has crafted.

The Penguin will very much be a traditional srub-to-crimelord series, as it follows the rise of Oz - aka The Penguin. I expect a dark, gritty crime series, with mafia-esque vibes, and considering that HBO knows how to craft a crime series better than ayone... I have high hopes for this one.
