Back in the day, Mafia was the game. Every cool kid in the schoolyard was playing it, and everybody who wasn't playing it... wasn't cool. Simple. There was even a time when Mafia was cooler than GTA because it was "real mafia stuff" – as if we had any clue as kids, but hey... it definitely felt grittier.

A lot of people are starved for a new Mafia game, considering the last one was Mafia 3 released in 2017, and it wasn't exactly what we were hoping it would be. Sure, the Mafia Definitive Edition from 2020 was lit, but still... we need fresh blood.

Good thing then that the release date of Mafia 4 is officially confirmed. Here is everything we know so far about Mafia: The Old Country.

Release Date Now Confirmed

Hanger 13's last Mafia project, Mafia: Definitive Edition, was released in 2020, and we can safely assume that they have been at least partially working on the fourth installment since then. Now, the release is set in stone. In a post on the official Steam page, the developers mention that on May 8, a livestream will be held to discuss the history of the franchise. At the base, we can read:

Mafia: The Old Country is available August 8, 2025. Pre-order now for PlayStation®5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, and stay tuned to the official Mafia website for more information.

This means, that Mafia 4 will release ahead of GTA 6!

Mafia 4 Gameplay Details

Hangar 13, the developer of Mafia 4, have been revealing details about the game left, right and center... via LinkedIn and now via the official Steam page for the game.

Stealth System

In a LinkedIn post looking for a Principal AI Designer and Lead AI Designer, the wording mentions "engaging Stealth and Combat gameplay loops", indicating that the game will feature a stealth system:

"Work closely with the AI Lead and relevant stakeholders to ensure delivery of engaging Stealth and Combat gameplay loopsHands on design and development of our combat and non-combat NPCs"

This was probably to be expected.

Unreal Engine 5

The official website amazes us with stunning visuals, almost like a movie. No wonder: The game will run on Unreal Engine 5, so you can lean back and enjoy period-authentic detail like an old Italian drama. From what we can see, the graphics look absolutely phenomenal.

Extended Gun Play

Mafia 4 will feature multiple weapons and play styles. On the official Steam page, we learn that we can use contemporary pistols, rifles and shotguns. In addition to melee knife-combat, we can assume that you'll have to earn your place in the Torrisi family.

Many Ways To Go Places

Also confirmed are multiple ways to roam around the open world. You can ride a horse or go with stylish and classy automobiles. Travelling (or fleeing from your opponents) never looked so good.

Mafia 4 Plot Details

Mafia: The Old Country will be set in early 1900s gritty, muddy Sicily. You play as Enzo Favara, a young man escaping a brutal past of hard labor in Sicily's sulfur mines, who rises through the ranks of the Cosa Nostra. As Enzo earns his place in Don Torrisi’s crime family, he navigates a violent world shaped by loyalty, vendettas, and survival. With immersive storytelling, period-authentic settings, and cinematic visuals, the game delivers a gripping look at the roots of the Mafia – where family means power, loyalty comes at a cost, and every choice carries weight.

What a fantastic direction to take the story in. Far better than whatever they were doing in the third game.
