Nearly 30 years after My Best Friend’s Wedding charmed (and crushed) hearts, a sequel is officially in the works.

The 1997 romantic comedy My Best Friend’s Wedding, a genre-defining hit that helped cement Julia Roberts as Hollywood royalty, is in talks to get a second chapter.
Sony Pictures is reportedly in the early stages of developing a sequel to the popular film, for which rising writer and filmmaker Celine Song has been brought on board to write the script.
While no director or cast members have been officially announced, Dermot Mulroney, who played Roberts’ best friend and would-be love interest in the original, has confirmed that a sequel is at least being discussed behind the scenes.
While promoting his upcoming Netflix series The Hunting Wives, Mulroney told The Post:
“There is talk of a sequel. I know nothing about it. Last I heard, quote, lawyers were talking."
Fans of the original will remember My Best Friend’s Wedding for its unconventional twist on the rom-com formula: Julianne (Roberts), upon realizing she’s in love with her best friend Michael (Mulroney), tries to sabotage his wedding to bubbly bride Kimmy (Cameron Diaz).
The film became a box office hit and is now considered a rom-com staple, celebrated for its bittersweet ending.
Sony's decision to revisit the story aligns with a trend of romantic comedy revivals, capitalising on the nostalgia of millennial and Gen X audiences by introducing new generations to timeless love stories.
Given Celine Song's distinctive approach to writing dramatic love stories, as demonstrated in her recent successes such as Past Lives and Materialists, the sequel is likely to provide a more sophisticated, potentially bittersweet continuation (assuming it gets the green light).
For now, fans will have to wait and watch, just like Julianne once did, as the pieces slowly fall into place.
