Ready Player... None? Atari Releases Adventure-Reboot Amidst Silksong Hype To A Peak Of 15 Players

Almost no one plays Adventure of Samsara, even though it serves as a reboot to the father of Easter eggs.

Have you heard of the 1980 Atari classic "Adventure"? Considered one of the first action-adventure games, it not only was one of the first to feature an open world, it also popularized the still-standing tradition of adding Easter Eggs; in Adventure you can enter a hidden room in the game that just features the developer's signature. The Easter egg is even a core plot point in the movie Ready Player One.

Now, Atari has released a modern Metroidvania reboot of the game on the same day as Silksong. For whatever reason, instead of delaying the game in the wake of the biggest indie-release like other studios did, the developer went ahead and released it anyway.

Adventures Of Samsara

Nowadays, the original Adventure by Atari could probably only be seen as obscure pixel mush. That's why Adventure of Samsara is not trying to be a remake or a sequel.

Adventure of Samsara instead asks players to search for subtle references to the very first adventure game as they journey through a remarkably deep world.

The game rather comes with a beautiful 2D pixel art-style and instead of just a Pixel, you control the "Solar Champion, a long-dead Plutonian resurrected by the primordial light of the Sun".

Developed by the Brazilian studio Ilex Games, you will "battle through a series of diverse, interconnected biomes and confront brutal mutant bosses".

This all sounds like a fun time and an interesting concept to reboot a classic. How many are playing this game?

15 Concurrent Players

As mentioned before, the game released on the same day as Silksong. The hype around that game has been so big that no other game could have competed with this little giant. Marcelo Rigon, CEO of Ilex Games, talked about their plans to release the game on the same day as Silksong.

Everything was moving according to the plan until Silksong announcement for release on the exact same day as our title – September 4. We talked a lot among ourselves and with Atari and we decided to keep up with the promise we made to the people that already made their pre-order.

This act of bravery might deserve respect, it does not seem like David vs. Goliath. The Easter eggs have clearly lost against the bugs. As of today, Adventures of Samsara has a total of 18 reviews on Steam. They are all positive, but probably not the numbers Atari or Ilex Games have hoped for.

Team Cherry announcing Silksong only 2 weeks in advance might have generated more hype for the game, but it also became a curse for every indie developer that planned a release close to Silksong. Just delaying the game is not always as easy when pre-orders and schedules are already set in stone.

Have you even heard about Adventures of Samsara? Do you think Team Cherry should have given other developers more time to prepare for the biggest indie-launch that even broke all online stores?
