Adaptations usually get slammed for straying from the page, but every so often a change genuinely improved the story. Here are 15 book changes that actually made the movie better.

15. Stardust (2007)
Neil Gaiman's novel ends with Tristran choosing a quiet, unremarkable life over the fairy tale. Stardust, the 2007 film from Paramount, gives Yvaine and Tristan a throne, a coronation, and eighty years of shared immortality instead. Gaiman himself has said he enjoys the movie on its own terms rather than as a copy of his book. That answer never quite satisfies readers who wanted the smaller, sadder ending to survive. | © Paramount Pictures
14. The Martian (2015)
Andy Weir's book spends pages walking through the chemistry of Mark Watney turning hydrazine into water. The 2015 film, directed by Ridley Scott for 20th Century Fox, trims most of that math into quick montage and voiceover. Matt Damon still gets the botany speech and the duct tape, just less of the arithmetic underneath it. Readers who loved the novel's problem solving call that the one loss the adaptation never made up for. | © 20th Century Fox
13. The Bourne Identity (2002)
Robert Ludlum wrote Jason Bourne as a man drowning in Cold War conspiracy, layers of moles and double agents stacked on top of each other. The 2002 film, released by Universal, strips that down to a man who can't remember his own name fighting his way through Europe. Doug Liman's version trades plot density for legs, fists, and a Mini Cooper chase through Paris. Ludlum's estate kept publishing sequels under his name for years, but none of them look like what ended up on screen. | © Universal Pictures
12. Children of Men (2006)
P.D. James wrote a novel about global infertility as a slow, talky meditation on faith and despair. Alfonso Cuarón's 2006 film for Universal turns that same premise into a chase through checkpoints, refugee camps, and one unbroken six minute ambush scene. The book's Theo is a detached Oxford academic; the film's Theo, played by Clive Owen, is dragged kicking through a war zone he never asked to enter. Cuarón has said he barely reread the source material once the script took shape, which is exactly what people who love the novel hold against the film. | © Universal Pictures
11. The Prestige (2006)
Christopher Priest's novel tells its story through diaries within diaries, letting the reveal about Angier and Borden's rivalry surface slowly across decades. Christopher Nolan's 2006 film for Warner Bros. cuts between timelines instead, front-loading the magic tricks so the audience is performing its own trick alongside the characters. The book's cloning subplot stays quiet and clinical; the movie turns it into Tesla coils and a warehouse full of dead top hats. Priest has said he admires the adaptation, which hasn't stopped decade-long arguments about which version's twist actually earns its ending. | © Warner Bros.
10. The Devil Wears Prada (2006)
Miranda Priestly hits harder in Lauren Weisberger's book, throwing tantrums that read more like abuse than eccentricity. Meryl Streep's version, in the 2006 20th Century Fox release, gets a quiet moment over glasses and a failing marriage instead. That single scene turns her into someone worth understanding rather than just escaping. People who wanted a villain punished for two hours still bring up how the film lets her win. | © 20th Century Fox
9. No Country for Old Men (2007)
Cormac McCarthy wrote a sheriff's closing monologue that stretches for pages, full of dreams and half-formed regret. Joel and Ethan Coen kept most of it, but the 2007 Miramax film lets Tommy Lee Jones deliver it into silence instead of explaining the silence away. Anton Chigurh gets less interior monologue on screen and somehow feels more like weather than a man. The book argues its themes out loud. The movie just lets you sit in a kitchen and feel them. | © Miramax
8. The Mist (2007)
Stephen King's novella ends with static on a car radio and a word that might be hope. Frank Darabont threw that out for the 2007 Dimension Films release and gave David Drayton a bullet count of four, one bullet short of mercy for himself. King has said publicly he wishes he'd thought of that ending first. That's not a small compliment, and it hasn't stopped people from calling the scene unwatchable for entirely different reasons. | © Dimension Films
7. Fight Club (1999)
Chuck Palahniuk's narrator shoots himself and wakes up in what reads like heaven, angels included. The 1999 Fox film, directed by David Fincher, cuts to buildings collapsing outside a window instead, Marla's hand in his. Palahniuk has said he actually prefers the movie's ending to his own. Whether that counts as the author settling the argument or just adding another voice to it depends entirely on who you ask. | © 20th Century Fox
6. The Princess Bride (1987)
William Goldman's novel keeps interrupting itself with a fake editor's notes, cutting whole chapters about Buttercup's ugly duckling years. His own screenplay for the 1987 film, released through 20th Century Fox, throws almost all of that scaffolding out and just tells the story straight. Fans of the book's trick miss the layers of fiction pretending to be nonfiction. Everyone else just quotes Inigo Montoya and moves on with their day. | © 20th Century Fox
5. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
Thomas Harris built his novel around three tangled investigations, with Clarice Starling splitting attention between Buffalo Bill and a Senator's daughter. Ted Tally's screenplay cuts the fat and keeps the camera locked on the Lecter interviews instead. Jonathan Demme's The Silence of the Lambs won all five major Oscars at the 1992 ceremony, the first horror-adjacent film to do it. Trim a novel down far enough and apparently you get the only movie in the genre that's ever managed that. | © Orion Pictures
4. Forrest Gump (1994)
Winston Groom's Forrest plays football, wrestles, and occasionally throws his own feces, a detail the film wisely leaves on the page. Tom Hanks plays him as guileless instead, a man who genuinely doesn't understand cruelty rather than one who matches it. Paramount released the film in 1994 and it went on to win six Oscars including Best Picture. Softening a character usually flattens him, but this is the rare case where it gave him a whole personality. | © Paramount Pictures
3. Jaws (1975)
Peter Benchley's Chief Brody spends a chunk of his novel worrying that his wife is sleeping with Hooper. Steven Spielberg cut that thread entirely and pushed Brody's fear of the water and his duty to the town front and center. Roy Scheider plays him as a guy in over his head who still gets in the boat anyway. Universal's Jaws made over 470 million dollars worldwide in 1975, and none of that money was riding on a subplot nobody missed. | © Universal Pictures
2. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Red narrates Stephen King's novella as a red-haired Irishman, which makes the casting of Morgan Freeman a flat contradiction on paper. Frank Darabont's script simply drops the physical description and lets the line about being Irish become a joke Freeman delivers to camera. Nobody watching The Shawshank Redemption in a theater in 1994 seemed to mind, since the film barely broke even before finding its audience on cable. The book's joke got rewritten and the movie ended up funnier for it. | © Columbia Pictures
1. The Godfather (1972)
Mario Puzo's novel spends real estate on Johnny Fontane's career and a subplot about Sonny's mistress that never made it near a soundstage. Francis Ford Coppola and Puzo's own screenplay strip that away and center Michael Corleone's slide from outsider to heir. Al Pacino was 32 when The Godfather premiered in 1972, a role Paramount initially didn't want to give him. Puzo cowrote the script himself, so whatever got cut, he signed off on cutting it. | © Paramount PicturesAdaptations usually get slammed for straying from the page, but every so often a change genuinely improved the story.
