Rainbow 6 Siege: The 5 Best Defenders for Teamplaying in Year 9, Season 1

1-6

Don't miss these Operators!

Castle

5. Castle

Castle is a unique Operator, that has been around Rainbow 6 since release. If used correctly, he's fun to play and his possibilities to set up a site are endless!

He has 4 Barricades that are bulletproof, and it takes 9 hits to open them with melee attacks. The only thing that can open them instantly are explosives, which are limited on the attacking side. He has a solid primary with almost no recoil, and his secondary is a shotgun, which makes him perfect for site setup. However, he has a major disadvantage: if played incorrectly, you could end up throwing the round. Don't just castle the outside doors and block your own teammates, instead, look for ways to make it difficult for the attackers, not your own team.

One season prior, he wouldn't have made it onto this list, but this season gave him a huge upgrade: HE HAS AN ACOG! ACOGs are very rare on defense and can give you a huge advantage at a distance. So that's why he made it into the top 5.

Azami

4. Azami

Hiding places in Rainbow 6 Siege are limited, and experienced players know them all. That's where Azami comes into play; her Kiba Barriers allow you to set up the Bomb Site on a whole new level, catching attackers by surprise.

Her Kiba Barriers aren't bulletproof anymore, but it takes a buckload of ammunition to destroy them. She can throw them and close off lines of sight from a distance, but experienced players use her for crazy setups on site. Combined with a Mute, she can be an annoying obstacle for attackers. You have enough Kibas for your whole team!

Most newer Operators don't make it that easily onto the list of default operators, but Azami quickly reached default potential and is used a lot in higher elos and even in the pro league!

Bandit Kaid

3. Bandit/Kaid

"Breach denial" has been in the game since release and remains an important aspect of gameplay. Attackers will always try opening up as many lines of sight as possible, and this is where Bandit or Kaid come into play.

Bandit and Kaid's task is to electrify reinforced walls that lead into the bomb site. When used correctly, their utility should deny attackers access via those particular walls into the site. Bandit has car batteries, and Kaid has throwable claws. Both operators can electrify up to 4 walls, which makes defending a lot easier on many bomb sites.

While both operators are crucial to winning a round on most bomb sites, there are many counters for them on the attacking side, which is why they "only" reach place 3, an honorable position.

Mute

2. Mute

Rainbow 6 Siege is based on gathering intel, so what could be more powerful than an operator who denies it? Almost nothing! Mute has also been in the game since release and boasts one of the highest pick rates in higher elos and in the pro league. You don't want to miss out on this masterpiece of an operator!

He has four Mute Jammers which allow you to block every door on almost every site. They mainly prevent drones from gathering intel, but generally counter almost every attacker operator (as long as you stand next to the Mute Jammer). Attacker gadgets get jammed and can't be used until they're out of range of the Mute Jammer, so attackers have to expose themselves to retrieve their gadgets.

He has a shotgun, which is great for site setup, but also for close-range kills. His secondary is the SMG-11, undoubtedly the best secondary in the game. It has a high fire rate, and once you get used to the recoil, it almost guarantees you a kill in a gunfight!

Mute has been, is, and will always be one of the best defenders in the game. I highly recommend this operator for every new team that wants to climb up the ranked ladder!

THE LORD HIMSEL... nah just kidding!

Jäger

1. Jäger

Throwable gadgets can be really annoying when defending, and in higher elos, they are used a lot to destroy defenders' utility or even kill you. And you don't want to be left naked without any gadgets, do you? That's where Jäger, the GOAT (since release, mind you), kicks in.

Jäger has three ADSs that destroy any throwable utility before reaching its target and is a great help for your teammates anchoring on site. Your Bandit is tricking the wall? Pick Jäger! Azami is holding garage? Pick Jäger! You have a Mira setup? Pick Jäger! Some defenders can be very annoying for attackers, but with Jäger, it gets even more annoying. On top of this, he has one of the best guns in the game, which deals a ton of damage and is very accurate at long distances.

Jäger isn't very useful as a solo player; you're mainly playing him for his gun and throwing away his utility. But in a team, he shines. "Why," you ask? Well, he almost never uses his gadget for himself—he's a born team player. Deservedly in first place on this list.
