FIFA 23 tactics
The best FIFA 23 lineups and tactics.

FIFA 23 is finally out and especially in Ultimate Team people are already grinding hard. Especially in the Weekend League the rewards are incredible in FIFA 23 and that's why the tactics and formations are very important. In addition to a competitive starter team, the formations, instructions and tactics can help you to reach a good rank in Division Rivals and FUT Champions.

Because if you start a game with three center backs, you'll probably lose a lot of matches. As every year, there are a few lineups that are simply meta. That's why in this article we look at the best formations in FIFA 23 - and of course we take a special look at Ultimate Team. Nevertheless, our information: You can (and should) use these tactics and formations in all modes in FIFA 23.

FIFA 23: The Best Lineups - Formations - Tactics - Instructions

When we talk about formations, we mean the classic formations like the 4-2-3-1 or the 4-4-2. Every year a different lineup is the best, that's why you should keep an eye on this article in the first months of FIFA 23. And because the position of your players has to be right in order to get full chemistry, the starting formation is even more important. After all, who wants to invest money in the position cards right from the start? Therefore our tip: Choose one of the following line-ups and let the players play in the right positions - the new chemistry system is... let's say a bit weird.

Let's just remember FIFA 21, when suddenly five defenders were the best way to destroy your opponents (such an annoying tactic). Most of the time, however, four defenders in the back are really strong. And also in FIFA 23 there are again two or three formations, from which you should choose one to win as many games as possible in the Weekend League.

In addition to the formations, the tactics and instructions are also extremely important. If you ignore them, your full-backs are way too offensive and your strikers are far too defensive. Here you have to set all the instructions correctly - we will of course also explain what these are in this article, which you should definitely keep an eye on, as we will update it regularly if certain formations or instructions turn out to be meta.

4-2-2-2 – The Standard Formation

The 4-2-2-2 system was already really popular in FIFA 22. Here you have an enormous number of options, both in the offense and in the defense. The CDM's are very important in the center, the four attackers build the perfect offense.

The 4-2-2-2 seems to be one of the strongest formations in FIFA 23 so far. You should employ the following tactics and instructions if you want to be successful with this setup:

Defensive:

  • Balanced/pressing after losing possession
  • 45 Width
  • 50 Depth

Offensive:

  • Balanced
  • Direct Passes
  • 50 Width
  • Players in Box: 6
  • Corners: 2
  • Free Kick: 2

Instructions:

  • RB/LB: Stay Back While Attacking
  • CDM: One player should Stay Back While Attacking and one with Balanced Attack
  • CAM: Stay Forward
  • ST: Nothing/ Get In Behind

Of course, there are numerous options when it comes to tactics. In the defense you should set "Balanced" and as soon as you are behind and time is running out set to "Pressing after losing possession". It also remains in the offense with "Balanced". In terms of instructions, however, it is clear: Set the full-backs to "stay behind while attacking" (unless you are behind).

The CDM's can split up, meaning one stays behind while attacking and one plays balanced. The CAM's should stay forward and when we think of the strikers you have two options: Doing nothing here makes definitely sense, if you want the two center forwards to always run properly, set "Get In Behind". Our tip: tell the faster striker to "Get In Behind" and the other one does not get any instructions.

The Best Formation: The 4-2-3-1 System

However, we currently see the 4-2-3-1 system ahead of the 4-2-2-2. The CAM is just extremely good for your game there and can provide a lot of structure. It's just the formation that most squads (if we take a look at the clubs) are built on.

Of course, some patches can bring other formations into focus again, which is why you should definitely keep an eye on this article. Anyway, let's take a look at the tactics!

Defensive:

  • Balanced/pressing after losing possession
  • 55 Width
  • 50 Depth

Offensive:

  • Balanced
  • Direct Passes
  • 55 Width (the CAM's are like wings here)
  • Players in Box: 7
  • Corners: 2
  • Free Kick: 2

Instructions:

  • RB/LB: Stay Back While Attacking
  • CDM: One player should Stay Back While Attacking and one with Balanced Attack
  • CAM: Stay Forward
  • ST: Get In Behind

What is different here from the 4-2-2-2: Your tactics let you play a little wider so that the two CAMs play more like wingers. And one more change: the one striker should "Get In Behind" so your CAM can play beautiful passes. Of course, it's important that you have a fast centre-forward.

The Meta Formation: 5-1-2-2

Since early crosses are simply broken in FIFA 23, we recommend starting with five guys at the back. Of course, you should first find your way and test how you can make those crosses exceptional. Press L2 and cross and you'll see: Your strikers will have big chances time and time again.

It is not yet possible to say when the whole thing will be patched. Alternatively, a 5-2-1-2, a 5-2-2-1 or a 5-4-1 is also possible. Wing-backs are the key.

Defensive:

  • Balanced/pressing after losing possession
  • 50 Width
  • 60 Depth

Offensive:

  • Balanced
  • Direct Passing
  • 60 Width (make space for wing-backs)
  • Players in Box: 7
  • Corners: 2
  • Free Kick: 2

Instructions:

  • RWB/LWB: Full on attack
  • CDM: Stay Back While Attacking (with your wing-backs gone)
  • ST: Get In Behind

So, those were our best formations. If you always want to be up-to-date on which special cards await us, then check our FUT Event and Promo Calendar.
