We've run out of ideas, and nothing new is happening in League of Legends right now, so it's time to speculate and make predictions about the upcoming League of Legends season.
Last year, we had a huge in-game event that took months to complete with Viego, Gwen, Akshan and Vex being released, but in 2022 we predict that a new event will sweep us off our feet and get us to play – a Void event.
So, it's time to put on our lore hats to check out just what could be going on in Runeterra right about now and what we're preparing for. Why do we think that a Void event is imminent, and what effect will this have on League of Legends in total?
What is the Void in League of Legends?
The Void is a region in League of Legends. It isn't a region that manifests in the physical realm, though, like some of our other favorite places in League of Legends lore like Bilgewater or Ionaia.
Screaming into existence with the birth of the universe, the Void is a manifestation of the unknowable nothingness that lies beyond. It is a force of insatiable hunger, waiting through the eons until its masters, the mysterious Watchers, mark the final time of undoing.
The Void is inhabited by grotesque monsters and creatures that will haunt you in your sleep. Their purpose? To force the end of the world as we know it. Mysterious “watchers” that have settled in the Freljord watch over the entrance to the Void.
It's these watchers that have also helped created the Iceborn. To this day, there is a split that opens up to the Void in the Freljord. The watchers have sealed this entrance with ice though, but who knows when that ice will melt – global warming could also be a problem in Runeterra we don't know.
Other than that, not much is known about the Void. It's a mysterious region filled with horrific creatures straight from an H.P. Lovecraft movie. One thing we can note though is that mortals who come into contact with the Void often stare into an eerie emptiness as they fall into insanity.
Champions With Connections to the Void
There are multiple champions that have some form of connection to the Void. Whether they're creatures born from the Void or mortals that have set foot into the mysterious plane of existence, there is a bit of everything for all players to enjoy:
From those champions listed above, only Kassadin and Kai'Sa are actually champions fighting along the side of Runeterra. Malzahar might be a mortal, but he has aligned himself with the Void. All other creatures are Voidborn.
What Hints At a Void Event in 2022?
Okay, the Void this and that… sure it's interesting, but why a whole Event? Riot please, we want a Freljord event or even an event around Demacia! Give me 10 more Lux skins!
But let's be real, there have been so many obvious hints dropped by Riot in recent months that not hosting a huge Void event would be illegal. Void-themed merch has hit the store and much more has also been hinted at, so let's check out the evidence.
The New Void-Jungler in League of Legends
In the September champion roadmap, Reave3 officially explained that a new monster creature from the Void is in the making for 2022. And when I say confirmed, he wrote: “an overwhelming new jungler that should fill a Void in all our hearts”. Let's move on to January 2022, and we get another confirmation. Reav3 explains the obvious before his eyes turn purple, and he begins to mutter about 'Runeterra in its true form'. Sure, the stunt was cringe, but it stamped home that the Void champion was coming.
Let's also not forget that Riot still owes us a mystery-VGU. Some speculate that the mystery VGU that will hit servers after Udyr is finally released belongs to none other than Cho'Gath. The big guy wasn't on the list of possible VGU's to vote for during the Season 12 stream, either, making us think that the Cho update is real and coming sooner than we can imagine.
Void Hints in the Season Trailer: The Call
Have we already talked about the Season 2022 trailer already? No? Alright, then it's my time to shine and take this bad boy apart, frame-by-frame. Let's start with a few obvious facts. Kai'Sa and Taliyah, who have become friends, stand before the lost city of Icathia – Runeterra's gate to the Void.
If you're curious about how these two became friends, check out the recent short story Riot released on them. The statue the pair is standing before also has some deeper meaning – one of defeat, wherein not even gods could stand up against the Void. Now, as the trailer plays, where does Kai'Sa end up in the end? Care to take a guess? Of course, no other space than the Void.
But that isn't all we get to witness in the trailer. Ornn, the forge god, forges a final sword before setting it aside to make his way somewhere. Doesn't that seem suspicious to you? Sure, I could be reading too much into this, but something big has to have happened for him to leave his craft behind to put a stop to the situation up on the surface of Runeterra, right? What could possibly be big enough to warrant his attention? Of course, nothing but the Void fits.
There is so much foreshadowing in the trailer. In 2021, we got to see Viego before we even knew he was coming to League of Legends and in 2020 there was so much interaction between Caitlyn and Vi. If we remember correctly, Arcane was supposed to be released in 2020… So there should be a whole lot of hints in the 2022 trailer as well regarding any lore event.
When Will the Void Event Take Place?
The Void Event will likely take place in the middle of 2022. We will be receiving another champion from Piltover & Zaun before the release of the Void jungler, which means that the event should be taking place around July and August, much like the Sentinels event.
So, have we managed to convince you that a Void event will be heading to the League of Legends client quite soon? Are you hyped for a new monster champion? How many tentacles will this thing have? My guess is 13.
