Aurelion Sol Is Getting A Rework

Aurelion Sol hasn't been great since his release. He's got great lore, great visuals, but none of it lives up to his awful gameplay. So, Riot is introducing a new type of champion rework — the CGU.

In the April 2022 Champion Roadmap, Reav3 revealed that the mystery VGU is none other than Aurelion Sol, only he isn't getting a visual and gameplay update, but something completely different and new, called a Comprehensive Gameplay Update.

What does that even mean, and why was Aurelion Sol chosen for this update? Let's check out everything we know about the champion rework and what has been leaked before already. Finally, ASol is getting some much-needed love from Riot.

What Is A CGU?

First, we have to check out what a CGU even is. Aurelion Sol has some of the coolest visuals in the game and according to Reav3 in the April 2022 Champion Roadmap, he explains that ASol is in the top ten most liked visuals in League of Legends, which just goes to show that his lack of playtime for most players isn't his visuals, nor is it his lore, but his gameplay.

A Comprehensive Gameplay Update will basically wipe out his entire existing kit without changing his visuals, nor his lore. These types of updates will be done for champions who either have gameplay issues which cannot be fixed by simply changing some abilities around, or for champions whose gameplay doesn't live up to their fantasy.

Aurelion Sol will be the first champion to receive a CGU and if the changes land, then players can expect these types of updates for some other champions as well in the future.

Why Aurelion Sol For the CGU?

As already mentioned, Aurelion Sol is a champion that from his lore and fantasy, is very popular, but his gameplay just doesn't live up to it at all. Even his visuals are liked by the community — other than the fact that you can see his stars even when in a bush.

That's why Riot is trying out something completely new with this champion. His narrative and his visuals won't be changed, but the champions team will be taking his kit, throwing it in the garbage and starting from scratch to create the space dragon fantasy we all wish for. In a previous post on Reddit, Reav3 explained that the 'secret VGU' will be unlike anything Riot has done before.

When the champions team looked at Aurelion Sol, they realized a few small changes, like they have been doing to champions like Ahri, Taliyah or Olaf would help out Aurelion Sol, which is why they've decided to create this new type of kit rework.

We didn’t think patching up his kit with small changes would deliver on his promised thematic fantasy, so we decided to try a new type of champion update: a Comprehensive Gameplay Update or CGU.

Aurelion Sol Rework Leaked

According to BigBadBear on YouTube, the next League of Legends rework is going to be none other than Aurelion Sol. The known leaker has even already predicted this in December 2021, ahead of the 2022 season.

While Cho’Gath would have been a nice VGU, Aurelion Sol is in desperate need of a complete revamp. The champion hasn’t been played since his initial release in 2016 and a mini rework all the way back in 2019 completely ruined the champion and has left a bad taste in every Aurelion Sol mains mouth – the few who remain, at least. There is a reason why he’s always part of our least played champion list every month, right?

What Will Be Changed On Aurelion Sol’s Kit?

According to the leaks, Riot has invited a few Aurelion Sol mains to test out some upcoming changes to the champion. In the post on Reddit, it was explained that the team would be looking to change the champion's Q - Nebula Sphere and W - Galactic Opening. His E - Time Travel would be left unchanged.

Of course, these could just be some initial changes to the champion. Most Aurelion Sol mains – on Reddit at least – seemed disappointed with the potential changes, since the main problem isn’t the champion's Q, and a revert to his W would be all he needs instead of brand-new abilities.

This comes one year after RiotCobra went on the Aurelion Sol mains Reddit to ask for some opinions on the champion's gameplay and what the few who still bother to play the champion would change. Hopefully, Riot listens to the community.

This is what Reav3 wrote about the champion rework they're working on for Aurelion Sol:

Our goal is to give the space puppy an entirely new kit with massive changes similar to VGUs like Urgot’s or Sion’s, while making sure that it’s still thematically cohesive with who he already is.

When Will The Aurelion Sol Rework Be Released?

In the 2022 April Champion Roadmap, Reav3 stated that they're aiming to ship the Aurelion Sol CGU by the end of the year, which could mean that the rework will hit live servers in December or November 2022.

The next champion to be released will be the upcoming Void Jungler, who we predict to be released around May 2022. After them, we will be receiving a new ADC – whom we will learn more about in the April 2022 roadmap – and finally, the Udyr rework will go live later this year.

Who else is excited for all these changes coming to League of Legends, but one question remains, will we ever get a Cho’Gath update and will Zeri receive 10 more nerfs before the release of the ASol rework?
